All the trees were a blur of brown and green streams as they swept past us. My hands were darting out in front of me instinctively swatting away branches before they could make contact with my face. We were running for our lives through a forest we had never been to before. We had been trapped for so long after the world had gone to shit and most of the human race was dead. Trapped by people calling themselves The New Government. They where made up of soldiers and scientist conducting horrible experiments on any human left they could get their hands on. In order to “creat a new worl” The results of thier experiments, well lets say even hell would turn away these mutated abominations. The only way to not become another one of there sick creations was to escape at any cost.
So here we were charging through a forest. The sound of guns were cracking in the background whipping through the trees and smacking among their trunks as they made impact. To my right bits of bark splintering off after each impact spraying me in the face. The bullets flew past us with a shwoop shwoop as they drove themselves through the surrounding brush nearly missing their intended targets. Naturally I duck and swerve after each of the close calls in the hopes that the next bullet would also miss what ever part of my body it was intended for.
I looked down to my left to make sure my furry companion was still in one piece. He looked back up at me eyes wide and Determined, I could see by the look on his face and his fast long strides that effortlessly kept up with mine that he was still in one piece and in the fight. Together we charged through the forest jumping over downed trees and ducking low limbs in unison like we were two bodies operated by one brain. We were completely in sink in the moment. Straight ahead of us I could see that the ground was coming to a dead end seamlessly dropping off into what I assumed was a fast moving river by the rushing noise rumbling from below. About a mile off I could hear the loud rumble of an other worldly sounding and unforgiving waterfall. A quick glance over at my companion verified my fears as his eyes lowered and a determined look gathered on his expression. It was all the confirmation I needed. We were going over. All I could think in the moment was this is going to fucking suck.
We dropped down into the unknown. The slide down was all my ass at first but quickly I got caught up in that horrible,oh shit there is no stopping yourself now, tumble. I rolled down this slope for what felt like hours but in truth probably was only 10 seconds before finally dropping right into the rigged and freezing river.
Right away the water grabed hold of me tossing me from side to side. Twisting my body like it was nothing more than an old raggedy doll it dragged me down its rushing waters smashing me into every jagged rock along the way. My body giving off a splintering crack as my bones met the unmovable stones, breaking my arm upon impact. Red hot pain searing through my arm. My head was awkwardly tossed back suddenly as my back collided with one of the wet boulders splitting my spine instantly and right away I new I was in some serious trouble. Panic swelled my mind as I realized I could no longer feel anything below my waist. my vision blurred as the back of my head made contact with another rock sending sparks of light flashing across my vision. Nearby I hear my partner let out a heartbreaking yelp, he’s close but I cant pinpoint exactly where. The swirling wind makes his voice seem as though its coming from every direction.I can hear the desperate splashing of his paws and his pleading cries. I know he is putting up one hell of a fight to get back to me, fighting the currents as hard as I am fighting in an effort to get back to him but My left arm I discover is completely useless now having been crushed and twisted horribly. My back was broken from the last hit and had paralyzed my lower half. I start to drift in and out of conciseness the wound on the back of my head leaves swirling dark red water all around me. I am turned by a current just in time to see Zee as he nears the edge of the waterfall and for an instant like all time has stopped I see is eyes and the heart shaped locket that I had attached to his collar the day we met the day the world ended. One last time they meet mine and they are warm and loving and fearless giving me hope that maybe everything is going to be ok. I return his look with a warm I love you too buddy. Then time starts up again and he is gone over the edge And then So am I.
