The quiet was loud, as if the entire world was holding its breath in awe. Velvety crystals brushed softly against each other, lightly dusting the blanket of icy white clinging to the earth. I floated downward, one among millions. A tiny breeze gently sent me skidding along the ground before letting me rest.

“Hi!”

The bright sound startled me, though barely perceptible even in the silence. The snowflake beside me was smiling, its intricately detailed design so beautiful I couldn’t speak.

“My name’s Sparkle,” it continued.

“I-I don’t have a name,” I whispered. “Maybe I’m not special enough.”

The snowflake was laughing, a sound more beautiful than anything I’d ever heard.

“You choose your name, silly.”

“Oh.”

“We can be whoever we wan…” light disappeared as we were grabbed and packed into a ball of snowflakes.

“Sparkle?”

We were flying.

“Spark…”

SLAM! We flew apart. I landed in a human’s hair.

“Sparkle!”

I saw it, the beautiful shape dissolving, a tiny puddle of water forming on the human’s skin.

“You…can still be…what you want…” Sparkle was now just a drop of water, sliding down and dripping into the endless landscape of snowflakes.

I wanted to scream, to…

A hand ran through the hair.

I was melting, losing my shape. Sparkle’s words. 'You can be what you want.'

Dripping down, I landed beside another melting snowflake. “Help me,” it whispered.

I smiled.

“The name’s fluffy. We’re gonna be raindrops.”
