A television chatters in the background.

"...authorities in Marrow Creek are urging residents to remain calm, despite what they are calling an unexpected rise in unexplained fatalities. While officials stress that there is no evidence of foul play..."

A man steps out from his front door.

Suburban silence. Lawn sprinklers hissing. A dog barking in the distance.

His mailbox sits at the end of the driveway, red flag down.

Inside, a single white envelope.

No stamp. No return address.

He takes it.

Across town, a woman runs.

Barefoot. Phone in her hand. Breath pumping as hard as her legs.

"Maria!" she screams.

"Wait! It's him! It's him!

The man receives a text.

Are you still a lifesaver?

He stares at the letter.

"Maria!" She tries to dial her number. Again the call mysteriously drops.

The man replies.

YπŸ’˜

He tears open the envelope. White piece of paper. One name.

Lisa Mar.

"Maria!"

The woman stumbles into the street. Still shouting.

A car erupts into frame.

Impact.

Metal. Glass. Noise that swallows the rest of her scream.

A gust of wind.

Her phone receives a notification.

Deposit: $7,500.00

The man folds the piece of paper. Places it back in his mailbox. Raises the red flag.

Message:

Thank you for keeping Marrow Creek safe.

The TV keeps talking.

"...officials maintain that there is no immediate danger to the public. Residents are reminded that Marrow Creek is one of the safest towns in the county..."
