Resplendent in his evening attire of dress including red and white and gold. Of course, the midnight blue offered a feast for the eyes. The first black Commandant in Marine Corps history walked with his wife. He was sixty-two and she was forty. The evening went well until it was announced that Iran had attacked a barracks in Tehran that housed forty Marines. Sixteen of them were dead and a few more were injured.

The night was spoiled but the Commandant ensured that everyone else had a good time while he prepared a speech for the press. He felt it.
