The Navy sailor who sat with her arms folded, remembered that day on the beach in the Pacific. It was a battle. It was what happened after the fight, too.

She had been a nurse, but she was trained to fire a rifle. More of a corpsman, better yet. She aided with the bandages but also laid rounds down range. With three kills, she was the only woman during World War II to earn the Navy Cross.

In all of her experiences, she learned hand to hand fighting to protect the Marines.

“Mariam?” a voice called.

She turned and smiled.
