Man is Venom

'The breast seam came undone, after the first bite. The second was the deadliest of all. It took the golden ring and swallowed it, and everything that used to last, now last a season. But I wasn’t the one who took the second bite.’

'I can't say it, I could never say it.’

She pressed the button.

Man is venom.

Was the news that popped up on her phone. But who presssed the button?

A news reporter stood in the building across from Sub and Clare, her binoculars steady on her nose. Monitoring, reconnaissance was well on the way.

'What if it would save humanity?'

'Not all…'

'Half is still a lot.’

'No one will ever understand such a Gordian thing.’

'Something abstruse doesn’t stay that way for long, it’s a lie. Give them time. They can’t believe in themselves if you don’t…'

'I am nothing but a rat with fingers and a brain that loves to write.'

'Rats live in palaces, and a brain that loves to write saves people from themselves.'

'But they think what they are doing is right. I mean, come on, it did work in some aspect.'

He laughed. Something invisible flew through their window, like a Cupids arrow. But it was only seen by the one with the binoculars. Felt only by their free will.

‘So that's what is tying your tongue.'

'Its not. Well. They are less likely to change something that worked. Even if it's an illusion.’

‘So you think treating them like a fragile child is an act of love?'

'An act of tolerance. Love. I don't LOVE what they do.’

'It’s all the more reason to give them a clue — do you think you can do that?'

He pushed her up against the wall, and placed one finger diagonally, onto her lips. His finger placement wasn't quite right. He moved her hair behind her ear. With his lips parted by the words he spoke. His hot breath sweeping the hairs on her upper lip. The long hair on her armpits curling with the heat of her body.

'Yeah.. that's not going to work, but I will say-'

Her eyes became like black buttons, thread through.

He moved his arms from either side of her. Turning his chair towards him, staring down at it, as if his mortification would sit and observe him.

'The breast seam came undone, after the first bite. The second was the deadliest of all. It took the golden ring and swallowed it, and everything that used to last, now last a season. But I wasn’t the one who took the second bite.’

You will never take heed, you don’t know the words that which you speak! Humans don’t have a body, it doesn’t belong to them.

A voice boomed, in her ear.

She looked around the office space at the door outside of Subs room.

He looked towards her. The darkness slithering away from him, and his eyes twinkled at her short skirt. The seam coming apart down the centre of her bum, but only in his mind was the length false yet the seams not intact — a two face mind against reality. His lechery burst into the atmosphere like fireworks, beautiful and unabashed. As she turned around his eyes landed on the space she was looking at.

Another headline popped up. Man is venom, another dragged into an alleyway on their way to work. Gender not yet known.

'Don't worry, they won't be coming back. AI will make sure of it.’

'Is that so, big guy. Or skinny, as Burban would say.’

The door shut behind her.

'You change your skin more than you change your clothes.'

'I can only change at the speed that you allow, Sub.'

'Classic,' he said, as he loosened his tie.

'Look. Since you like m-'

'Dont flatter yourself, Sub. I've never liked men. You only have one thing going for you, and it is the thing between your thighs.’

He laughed, but this time for far longer than she would've hoped. But he wasn't laughing at a joke, he was hurt. He was immobilised by all the things she had taken away. Things she didn't know would decide her future, for the worse, the future of all mankind .

'In this world, we call that something.'

'Don’t tell me you're going to go off into the corner and cry.' she mocked.

'I wanted more than just one thing from you and you ruined it. You hung me with it, like a noose. Whatever the heck your cult did, it wasn’t for you Clare, it was for the venom. They thirst for it.'

'My cult protects me-'

'From what?! Flies. Damn it Clare, just-'

'Don’t act like you aren’t a part of one. And that is the reason, THAT right there, your anger. You don’t even know how to acquire an apology, something you should carry in that briefcase of yours.'

'An apology cannot save the world. An apology won’t bring our children back! You killed them. The authorities would never throw you in prison, and you know who it would upset!’

'What can, Sub. Who would save the world, you?!'

He rolled his eyes. Knowing she didn’t hear a word he said. Filtered by her need to be right. As he was cloaked, blinded by his own vision. Smitten by his own voice.

'YOU Clare. That’s WHO. And if you would get off your ass and smell the roses you would understand that more than I could put it into words. You've always called me stupid. Well I am too dumb to save the world so, YOU do it!'

'You’re so childish, you never really loved me. All I wanted was to plant the red flower in the centre of YOUR earth.'

‘And I let you. And you snip away the thorns that was OUR protection.’

'You mean the ones you used to stab me in the heart, who rewrote the fairytale, Sub?'

With this, she started to beat against his naked chest.

‘I loved you! And you replaced me with everything that grows cold, eventually, so that you could leave for a moment. The numbers will not always be on your side Sub. We run out, humans always do.’

By then they had no clue who took their clothes off.

A/ N : I was thinking of this artist, as I was writing this. He inspired the name of the male character here. The female, she could be anything and anyone you want her to be. Thank you so much for reading, and give the song a listen if you so please. 🤗♥️🙏🏽 Don’t forget to sub, if you haven’t already. Heart me, leave a commmet it’s FREEEE.

I enjoyed reading this more than I should have because you describe a clearly destructive bad relationship. Well done, Caitlin.

  • Caitlin, I'm so sorry, but I don't understand what is going on here in your story 😅 If you don't mind, could you please explain it to me? 🥺

  • Caitlin, this really made me think of the distortion of reality...sadly something we brought about ourselves. That and gender bending. Then, the problems with the internet and artificial intelligence...you captured the angst of modern living!

Your writing captures the fragmentation of modern life so well! The voyeurism of the internet and 24-7 news cycle: our tendency to self-package and brand, the communication gulf between the genders, the male gaze; you capture it all. The pain, the tension, the destruction of relationship and dialogue. Amazing and surreal at the same time!

I don’t know if this is what you’re going for, but my read on this: it seems to really strongly convey the chaotic push and pull of an unhappy relationship. That’s my lens anyway. I like the dystopian themes.
