Let it be established that in the town of Wrackenford, anomalies occurred with sufficient regularity to demand explanation.

Let it also be observed that these anomalies - milk curdling, dogs howling at noon, and children speaking in hexameter - were attributed to strange and unnatural causes.

- Therefore, the Council of Corrective Inquiry must convene.

- A very specific text will be required to guide them.

Test One: The Question of Impossible Knowledge

- If she answers incorrectly, she is guilty of concealing her true knowledge.

- If she refuses to answer, she is guilty of defiance.

Test Two: The Trial of Contradictory Signs convenes.

A suspect is examined for marks.

- A mark is proof.

- The absence of a mark is proof of a hidden mark.

- A hidden mark is proof of cunning.

- If she says yes, she is guilty of malice.

The Malleus Maleficarum, usually translated as the Hammer of Witches, is the best known treatise about witchcraft. It was written by the German Catholic clergyman Heinrich Kramer and first published in the German city of Speyer in 1486. Some characterize it as the compendium of preexisting demonological literature of the 15th century.

The Malleus classifies sorcery as heresy, a severe crime at the time, and recommends that secular courts prosecute it as such. The Malleus suggests torture to get confessions and death as the only certain way to end the "evils of witchcraft." When it was published, heretics were often sentenced to be burned alive at the stake and the Malleus suggested the same for "witches." Despite being condemned by some members of the church, the Malleus was very popular.

The book was later revived by royal courts during the Renaissance, and contributed to the increasingly brutal prosecution of witchcraft during the 16th and 17th centuries. wiki
