Questions at the Edge
They shot the American redhead first, the big Latino next, both in the head, and then shot me in the leg. With the panic around us, only Binti noticed my cry of pain. She saw me stumble to the floor, blood seeping through my jeans, and jumped up on the platform to kneel next to me. She slipped off her rucksack, pulled out a clean towel -- probably her last -- and pressed it hard into the wound. It wasn’t the first gunshot injury for either of us.

Above the Storm
“You know I could kill you, right?” Daniela stepped back from the edge of the cliff. She barely glanced towards the direction of the voice, too focused on searching the clouds of dust below them for the flurry of movement she knew they hid. Instead of a response, she hummed her acknowledgement.

Aryotes-11: The End of Days
The average heart rate for a human being is seventy-two beats per minute. That was before the dark wave swept across the planet. In the year twenty ninety-nine there was a meteor shower, carrying one of the deadliest pathogens known to man. It affected over ninety-nine percent of all life on earth. As the remnants of the meteors burned in the atmosphere, they dissipated into the hazardous gas known as Aryotes-11. For most people, it caused heart failure. For the remaining few left alive, they morphed into these other-worldly mind-less creatures. These large, jagged, rock-like creatures; feed on anything with an active heartbeat.

Hawk Roosting
“It is safe in here,” the mouse repeated to itself as the eternal chorus of a song stuck in its head. “It’s safe…” The place was dark and damp, a safe den where it lived and where it found the ideal refuge from his menacing claws; his deadly grip that could end its existence. He did it with its family, one by one, tortured them; decapitated them. It could still hear them screeching shouts of resistance, “creeeee! creeeee!,” their last sound as they unsuccessfully tried to climb the peak of life, their lives. That tree trunk was its home, a place where it was born and it refused to leave. Home, the place where you are supposed to be happy and unafraid…

The Cult
It was late, these streets were lonely, only the distant sound of cabs and clubbers could be heard above the large machinery that plagued these desolate industrial zones in capital city. A man stepped under a dim flickering light cast from overhead, he had a face as white as snow and thin lips that set in a natural scowl. He pulled a carton of cigarettes from inside his overcoat and lit one, the smoke billowed around him like a harbour’s morning fog.

Metamorphosis
Earth - 452 AE (After Extinction) Often I lie awake through the night while the world sleeps soundly. Most are quiet, and I’m left with the company of Nature's thoughts. Winds gust in distinct patterns, like a language, giving accent to the sound of mostly restful wildlife. In a meditative trance, I listen; studying so as to become capable of deciphering the prose.

A.R.
The year is 436 A.R... A.R. meaning "After Revelations." My name is Kali; I am the leader of the New Egypt Faction, the most powerful Faction in the New World today with just over one million followers. I guess you can call me the New World Moses; my people look to me for direction and understanding. I am also the father of two sons whom I love deeply. As a leader, it is sad to say that other than my boys, with their innocence and inexperience, I despise the world as it is today.

From One to All
6.22.30 All this time, I’ve been preaching that your inner world reflects in your external circumstances and it seems that our inner worlds have collided all too much. This image that I see is empty and barren of any trace of love; just like the heart sitting around my neck. In fact, I look at this heart and wonder if it ever contained anything at all or if I have simply fallen for the image and wrapped my energetic cords around the neck of what I thought I was looking for. We all thought we were onto something great. If only we had held out a few more hours… seconds even- perhaps there would still be something left to look at. I can see the ways in which my inner landscape still exists; in the light peering into my tent through the tear above the zipper door, in the spices used to make my sardine and bean tacos taste like they’re meant to be enjoyed, even in the hours of hiking through the forest to get back to what used to be civilization. Here at my portable home and on the long walks, I find myself entirely at ease with the trees constantly teaching me how to remain grounded and peaceful amidst any storm. I breathe with them and recognize the wisdom lying in the infinite space between their leaves.
