The Nothingness
Why is it so cold? Why can't I feel my limbs? My body is filled with aches and cracks radiating constantly through my entire body . The pain is inescapable as though I'm lying on thousands of thousands glass shards. Each one digging deeper and deeper until I gasp from pain but the cold air chills my breath soon as I release. Even the cold air filling my lungs feels thick and prickly.

Arya & Twelve
“Dinner is ready,” a soft voice announces behind me. I nod so that the house worker knows I heard her. A small almost inaudible sigh slips past my lips. In the crease of my latest novel, I place a braided ribbon. I unfold my legs and climb out of my desk chair.

Silver History
Her heart thudded the inside of her ribcage as she booked it through the once crowded streets of Boston. Ragged men and women scattered here and there on the streets watched as this cross-country national champion raced away from her pursuers. It had been a long time since the world had collapsed after a global pandemic, and it had been even longer since she had run any significant distance as she was at that very moment. Fifteen years ago in her prime, Eudora would have escaped these guys on her tail without thinking twice about having to breath properly. Now the harsh New England winter’s air attacked her lungs like shards of ice.

Subfloor Six
Jocelyn opened her eyes, awoken from her afternoon nap by the chirping of an alert over the intercom. “Attention all Age 13-15 Apprentices: You are to report to Subfloor Six. Be prepared for inspection.” The metallic voice clicked off, leaving her in a silence that could only be achieved within the thick, stone walls. They eat echoes.

Aftershock
I hid around the corner of the abandoned mansion, my chest pounding against the heart shaped locket that hung around my neck. I could hear the clicking noises coming from the creatures in the distance. The heat from my breath filled my gas mask and made my brow bone bead with sweat. My black hair clung to my throat in clumps. It felt like I had been running for years, although I had only run a half mile. Sidling with my back against the wall, I held my breath and peered around the corner to my right.

Absolution
The heat didn’t bother me so much anymore. At least, that’s what I told myself. In the distance, a dust devil kicked up Sulphur yellow and scorched brown earth; sending it spinning through the air in a radioactive colored cloud across the desert landscape. After a while, one got used to living in a place where every day brought the same; unrelenting, unchanging heat. The light was just as bad. Everywhere you looked, it was like staring into the sun too long. Once ‘they’ had come, they seemed to have taken away everything about the planet that was gentle towards its original inhabitants.

The Game Changer
Mina stood on a mound of rubble looking towards the overgrown structures strangled with vines and algae. She stared off in the direction of the refraction of light that caught her eye. She must inspect. With no sun visible …. a reflection, of what? what could it be, and why?

Looking at Memories
Masiko looked out over the tall grassy fields, heat dancing into the air and the soft chatter of the village filling her with a familiar comfort. She gazed towards the south east with her long hand shading her eyes. Something tugged at her bright purple and white chitenge.

New Normal
I ate dinner slowly that night, chewed with a mechanical thoughtlessness, stared out into nothingness with dry bark grinding between my teeth. The table was silent. Dad, his brow furrowed in concentration, flicked through his phone for something diverting. Ann sat pensively, her dark hair hanging in a curtain almost touching her chicken and mashed potatoes. The fork lowered, then raised, and another bite of the gristly flavorless flesh disappeared between my teeth.
