Mud caked and smelling like wastewater, they made it out nevertheless. Mariana and José held onto their children, Amelio and Rafael clutching to them like jewels. They made it to the border of Mexico and Texas. Smiles plastered their faces.

“We’re almost there,” Mariana said with great joy. The couple and the two children passed the opening in a rusted out fence miles away from the checkpoint.

They journeyed on as they pushed the two children into America. Two troopers then pointed rifles at the two parents. Amelio and Rafael scooted up the hill. “Correr!” The mother called after them.
