Jessica and the Giant Fish

When the depths of the sea become a stage for both fear and fate

By Bilal MohammadiPublished 3 months ago 3 min read

Jessica had always been drawn to the sea. Ever since she was a child, she found peace in the sound of waves crashing against the shore and the glitter of sunlight dancing across the water. As an adult, she spent hours swimming, diving, and exploring the mysteries of the ocean. For her, the sea was not just water and waves—it was a living world, full of secrets and silent stories.

One evening, when the sky burned with shades of orange and pink, Jessica swam further than usual. The water was calm, and the horizon seemed endless. As she dove deeper, she felt a strange presence, as though something enormous was moving silently in the shadows below her. At first, fear crept into her chest, but then curiosity took over. She lingered, her heart racing.

From the depths emerged a giant fish unlike any she had ever seen. Its scales shimmered like silver under the broken shafts of sunlight, its eyes glowing with an almost human warmth. Despite its size—larger than any boat Jessica had ever sailed on—the creature’s presence felt strangely gentle. Instead of terror, she felt awe.

Jessica hovered in the water, frozen between fear and wonder. The fish circled around her slowly, as if studying her. Then, to her amazement, it brushed its side against her outstretched hand. Its skin was smooth, and in that touch she felt something beyond words: connection. It was as though two lonely souls had recognized each other in the vast silence of the sea.

From that moment, Jessica returned every day. She swam farther and farther out, seeking the giant fish. Each time, it was there, waiting for her, gliding through the blue depths like a shadow of the ocean itself. They played together, moving in spirals and loops. Sometimes she would cling to its back, letting it carry her effortlessly through the currents. Other times she would sing softly underwater, her voice muffled but somehow understood. The fish would circle her in response, as if listening.

Jessica began to think of the fish not as a creature, but as a companion. She named it “Lumen,” because its scales caught the sunlight like a thousand tiny lamps. Days blurred into weeks, and Jessica’s world no longer belonged to the land. Her friends noticed her absence, her family worried, but Jessica didn’t care. The ocean had claimed her heart, and Lumen was the reason.

One quiet afternoon, the sea seemed unusually still. Jessica dove into the water, her body cutting cleanly through the waves. She searched for Lumen with eager eyes, her chest tightening with anticipation. And then, as if answering her silent call, the giant fish appeared. But something was different.

Its movements were sharper, restless. Its glowing eyes no longer looked warm but wild. Jessica reached out, whispering softly as if to calm it, but the fish circled her quickly, its speed stirring the water into violent swirls.

“Lumen?” she murmured, bubbles escaping her lips. “What’s wrong?”

The giant fish paused in front of her, and for a heartbeat Jessica thought it would return to its gentle self. She could almost see the shimmer of recognition in its eyes. But then, in a sudden flash, it lunged.

The water erupted as the massive jaws opened, teeth gleaming like shards of glass. Jessica twisted, trying to escape, but the currents betrayed her. Panic surged through her veins. She had loved this creature, trusted it, given her days and her heart to it. And now, in the dark silence of the deep, she realized the truth: the ocean is never truly gentle. It only hides its hunger.

The giant fish struck, and the world around Jessica dissolved into chaos—churning bubbles, muffled screams, and the violent thrash of fins. For a fleeting instant, as terror swallowed her, she thought of the strange beauty of it all: to love something so vast and dangerous, and to be loved back only in the way the sea knows—by consuming.
