Scene one: The Awakening

The room is dark. On stage right, a

desk, pencil, lamp, journal, and a

chair. A single light lights up that spot. From out of the darkness, Archer

appears and sits at his desk. He picks

up the paper and begins to write.

ARCHER

Hello, Marie, my comfort, my joy, my love. You’re the only one I

have in this world. I… never had a way of communicating love to

another person, but you were always there for me when I needed

you most. People are so finicky. All of them. Sure, they may all

have different stories and backgrounds, but every single one of

them has one thing in common. They all disappear. No one ever

stays around anymore. You need them, yet they don’t need you.

The people who need you in their lives will always find a way. Through whatever means. It’s a weird feeling, you know? Being

around friends yet still feeling so alone.

The school bell rings. The room lights up.

Brittney, Brett, Chad, and Marie are

all sitting on a bench laughing and

having a good time. Archer approaches

and joins in with his journal in hand.

Marie notices Archer.

MARIE

Hi, Archer!

ARCHER

Hello, Marie. What’s going on?

MARIE

Nothing much. Brett was just telling us his story about how he lost

His virginity over winter break.

CHAD

Go on, Brett!

BRETT

Okay, okay. So, I was doing what I do best, you know what I’m

saying? As I was getting ready to finish, I realized I had

nowhere to release the kraken into. So, with my quick wits, I

found a sock on the floor and did what any normal person would

do in that situation.

BRITTNEY

SPLOOSH!

BRETT

Laughing

Baby, you know it! Turns out, that was Ben’s sock.

BRITTNEY

No way! He must have been so pissed with you.

BRETT

He was when he put it on.

Everyone laughs, and Archer chuckles a

little.

BRETT (CONT’D)

Moral of the story, don’t leave your socks near Brett the BEAST!

That was a good ass party though.

BRITTNEY

Yeah, it was. Hey, Archer. Tell us how you lost yours?

ARCHER

Me? I uhm. I uhhh. I… I haven’t lost mine yet.

BRITTNEY

Really? You’re a decently looking man. Surprised you haven’t had

sex yet.

ARCHER

I just want it to be with someone special, you know?

CHAD

LAME! Come on, man. We have a limited time on this rock as it is.

Why not live a little? You’re never around, and you’re always

carrying that stupid journal. What is that, your fourth one in these

last two months? You have to live in the moment, man, or you

won’t be living for long.

MARIE

Chad, give him a break. I think it is quite sweet of you to wait

to have such an intimate feeling with another person you like

very much.

ARCHER

You think so?

MARIE

I know so.

They share a smile. The school bell rings.

BRITTENY

Well, this has been boring. Come on, Bret, walk me to class. You’re not getting this ass.

Exits stage left.

BRETT

Don’t put up a fit, or else you won’t get this long DICK!

Exits stage left withChadd following

behind.

MARIE

What are we going to do with them?

ARCHER

Hey, uh. Thank you for helping me back there.

MARIE

Of course. What are friends for, Archer? Now, I need to head to

class. Don’t want to be late. Again. See you around, Archer.

Exits stage left.

ARCHER

Friends huh?

Light shifts to the desk.

Scene two: To love

ARCHER

To love. To set free. What does it mean to be a friend? This

term gets thrown around so often that I feel like it has lost

all meaning. If a friend hurts you, did they do it out of love

or to set you free from the pain? I can no longer tell the

difference between the two. In the end, we all feel pain. It is

in our DNA. The pain of loss. The pain of losing someone in your

life forever, never to come back. We can leave together, but we

can’t go together. Love hurts and love heals, friends come and

they go. This is our fate. To be forever alone.

The school bell rings. Lights up. Marie is

sitting on the bench writing in her

journal. Archer walks up to Marie with

his journal in hand.

Archer

Hi, Marie.

MARIE

Hello, Archer. What’s up?

ARCHER

Nothing much, just getting through these last few classes. I’ve

been doing well in all my classes. What about you?

MARIE

I am too. I’m just a little tired from the party last night.

ARCHER

Party? What party?

MARIE

Did no one tell you? It was last night at Brett’s house.

ARCHER

No idea.

MARIE

Oh. Don’t worry too much about it. There’s still the prom after-party you can go to. You’re going to prom, right?

ARCHER

That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. We’ve been

friends for a long time, Marie. And I uhhh. Uhhmm. Here.

Archer hands Marie his journal. Marie

opens the journal and stops when she

sees what Archer wrote.

MARIE

Reading out loud

Hello, Marie. My comfort, my joy, my love. There aren’t many

things I’ve found in this world to love. But you are one, if

not the only one, for me. I take comfort in our time alone

together, I’ve found joy whenever I am with you, and… I love

You, your weakness, your imperfections, your smile. I adore all

these things about you. You complete me. Will you go to prom

with me?

Stops reading

MARIE (Cont’D)

Archer, I… I don’t know what to say. Do you mean all

those things?

ARCHER

I do.

MARIE

Archer I… I-

Chad enters stage right.

CHAD

Hey Marie, sup Archer.

Chad kisses Marie on the cheek.

CHAD (CONT’D)

Am. Am I interrupting something?

ARCHER

Are you two?

Marie looks at Archer sympathetically

and nods. Archer goes to grab his

journal from Marie, but Chad grabs it

before he can get it.

ARCHER (CONT’D)

Give it back.

Chad finds the spot Archer made his

prom proposal to Marie.

CHAD

Oh. How unfortunate, Archer. Marie is no longer on the mart.

She’s taken by someone who lives in the moment and doesn't write it

in her diary.

Chad throws Archer’s book on the floor.

He rushes to pick it up. Marie tries to

Help him.

CHAD (CONT’D)

Leave him, Marie. Some people are destined to be alone.

Exits stage left. Marie backs away from

Archer.

MARIE

I’m sorry.

ARCHER

It’s okay. If you love something, you set it free. That’s what

Being a friend means.

Marie exits stage left. Lights shift to

the desk.

Scene Three: Farewell

Archer returns to his desk and writes.

ARCHER

Everyone is gone now. I am by myself. Cold and alone. But I will

always cherish the good memories we’ve shared. You may not be

in my life anymore, but just know that what you have done for me

is amazing. Thank you for being there with me all these years,

Marie. Even though your heart beats for another, I still love

you. Everything we have ever said, everything that we have ever

done, is contained in this journal. Thank you for everything. I’m

out of pages. Time to make some new friends.

About the Creator

Javere Green

We may have our differences, but there is one thing that connects us all. The art of creation. What we think is what we create. Starting off with an idea and seeing that idea take life is awe inspiring.
