Intermittent Fasting: A Double-Edged Sword?
Weighing the Pros and Cons of This Trendy Diet
Diet Fads: Reality Bleeds with Disinformation
Intermittent Fasting is one of the many methods promoted for both weight loss and better health; does it work?
Scientific research provides some evidence that supports the use of IF in the management of obesity through increasing metabolic rates and decreasing energy intake. It is demonstrated that it may raise the figure of insulin sensitivity, and foster adipose tissue reduction, and cardiovascular function. Some of the most popular are the 16/8 method, where one fasts for 16 hours, but can eat for 8 hours; and the other is the ADF or alternate day fasting.
In fact, the benefits of intermittent fasting do not end with improved weight loss. It may enhance the repair mechanisms of the cells, fight inflammation, and be beneficial for the brain. Some research suggests that it may have possible longevity effects; however, further controlled long-term trials should be conducted to discuss these effects.
However, there are some drawbacks or rather the negative side effects that come with intermittent fasting. Some adverse effects of fasting include the development of eating disorders or a relapse in case the person had earlier been treated for eating disorders. Some of the side effects that it may bring about include fatigue, and increased irritation frequency, and might also hinder concentration, especially in the early stages.
Intermittent fasting should be explained with caution and one has to put into consideration his or her needs. It is always good to speak to a healthcare provider before embarking on any form of change in meals or diet especially if you have pre-existing conditions.
Therefore, based on the evidence reviewed here, IF has the potential for both weight and health benefits but, far from being a universal panacea, needs application that takes account of individual differences in diets. It means that it is possible to successfully combine the attitude to food with regular adherence to proper nutrition and medical advice, without harming your health.
