In the Beginning

There was Light and Darkness

By Elizabeth GerschutzPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Two figures stood in a large empty room, staring down at their creation. Though from the outside all you could see was a mixture of blue and green on the orb, the 2 figures could see and feel everything happening on the surface.

The all-encompassing white figure was crying, hands clasped over their mouth while the other was stock still, horrified at what was happening on the surface. Neither had expected things to have taken such a turn, but it had. “We should destroy it. Start anew. Learn from this mistake.”

Turning to stare at their companion, the white figure tried to comprehend what the dark one was saying. Why they would wish something upon what they spent eons trying to perfect. “What are you saying? You wanted this too.” They seemed breathless in disbelief as to what they were hearing.

“No, I did not. You did. But you needed my help to do so. But now what? They are a horrendous species. They need to be destroyed.” Darkness huffed, shaking their head before gesturing between them. “Look at them, fighting over everything, harming one another without a thought.”

“No! I won’t let you do such a thing! We worked-” Light shouted in return.

“You worked. I just helped you when you weren’t enough. And apparently, even that wasn’t enough. Even with so much of you in them, they’re just getting worse and worse over time. What good comes from killing each other? Nothing but disaster. And I know all about that.” They pointed at the blue orb in front of them.

“Darkness, I know that. But wiping them out ruins all of that. You should know that I would never let that happen. And I do not wish you wage war on you.” They stood firm, daring the dark figure to fight back.

“I know Light, you’re too good for that. But I can not see how they would ever better themselves into what you wish to have created. I did not put that much of myself into them because this was your creation, something you wanted to be born, but now. Look at them. Even now they are waging war on each other and…” the dark figure sighed. They hadn’t meant to ruin what was supposed to be good. But yet it seemed their part that was in the beings below just grew and consumed.

“Light can not be seen alone, they needed the darkness to see what was good. In time they shall learn. You will see.” The white being reached out and gently took the others hand. “There’s still so much good in this world.”

“I’m sorry Light,” they breathed, looking down at the world. “I never wanted this to happen.”

“I am as well. But war is not the answer. Killing is not the answer. Maybe they need a push, something to look up to. Are you willing to play the villain?” They asked softly, caressing their thumb over Darkness’ knuckles.

“Yes. I shall always be the villain no matter what. What do you have in mind?” They resigned softly, ready to do what was needed to keep Light smiling brightly.

“Giving them a deity. Something to aim to achieve. You shall be my devil in disguise. Some may love you, others fear you. But know, I would never harm you.”

“Okay Light. Whatever it is you want.” Letting go to bow to them, making the other laugh softly.

“Oh Darkness, you don’t need to be doing that,” they tittered and patted their head.

“Oh but I did,” they said in return, glad to see that smile on their face after what they had discussed.
