If one day everyone in the world disappears.

Who am I? - If there is no one, do I still have value?

By Jim SmithPublished about a year ago 3 min read

If one day everyone in the world disappears and only I remain, the question is not:

How do I survive?

Who will I talk to?

The real question is:

Who am I?

If there is no one, do I still have value?

Should I commit suicide?

Who will light incense in memory of me?

If death is the end, with no world after death, should I commit suicide?

Is there anything for me to continue living for in this world?

Grass and trees, can you be my friends?

If I can continue living in that world, I realize that humans are just like grass and trees that can talk, and only I am a deity above all those grasses and trees. My self-worth is independent; grass and trees are just food for me to survive.

I can also live in that world by asking:

Is this a dream?

If this is a dream, was the real world I lived in before also a dream?

If so, everything I experience might be in a book. If so, the past is just the books we have read, things predestined to shape who we are. The present is the pages we are reading and writing. The future is what we predict, but do not know. If I am the writer of the book, do I need to care about what the previous pages have written to write the current page? Or in other words:

"Is the past that shaped you really you? Can you change yourself in the present? Keep dreaming about the future, a better version of yourself to change if you are not satisfied with who you are now. You are free at present, don’t let any past bind you, don’t let anyone judge or control your behavior."

These questions reflect the existential crisis one might face in such an unprecedented situation. The absence of human interaction, societal norms, and the need for survival would strip away all the external factors that define our lives, leaving us to confront the essence of our existence. In a world devoid of people, the true value and meaning of our lives would come into sharp focus.

In this solitary existence, the concept of self-worth would be redefined. No longer would our value be measured by social interactions, achievements, or the approval of others. Instead, it would hinge on our ability to find meaning and purpose within ourselves. The idea of living without validation or companionship would challenge our understanding of happiness and fulfillment.

Moreover, the notion of continuing to live in such isolation would force us to reevaluate our motivations and desires. The simple pleasures and distractions of daily life would be gone, replaced by a profound introspection about the nature of existence. We would be left with the fundamental questions about life and death, purpose, and the essence of being.

Ultimately, this hypothetical scenario serves as a stark reminder of the fragility and complexity of human existence. It urges us to appreciate the interconnectedness of our lives and the importance of finding meaning not just within ourselves but also through our relationships and contributions to the world. In the absence of others, we would have to confront the deepest aspects of our identity and the true value of our existence.

In such an isolated scenario, we might also reflect on the role of creativity and imagination in shaping our sense of self. Without external influences, the act of creating art, writing, or even daydreaming could become crucial in maintaining a sense of purpose and identity. The human mind has an incredible capacity to invent and explore new worlds, and in the absence of others, this creative power could be a lifeline. By engaging in creative activities, we can construct meaningful experiences and narratives that sustain our sense of self and provide a source of fulfillment even in solitude.
