there were six of us always together in high school. Good times for all;trouble for all. I was the unofficial leader of the group. My best friend was Dawn. She lived on the road behind me. We were together about every day.
Then there was Jackie. My get in trouble buddy. She was friends with almost everyone-unlike me. I was shy outside our group.
April was the goofy one. A laugh a minute. She was very pretty.
Annette was best friends with Lynda. She was an only child and very serious. Also very attached to her mother.
Lynda was quiet but has a wicked sense of humor-sarcastic in nature
Annette worked in the office second period. She would abuse her power by getting us out of class to “go to the office”. Which was code for I got you out of class to meet at the next door restaurant. The Soup and Scoop. We called it the sh## and Shovel. We would goof off there until everyone got out for lunch. Usually we returned for afternoon classes.
In typing class with Lynda I’d pass her notes behind the teachers back. I’d add dozens of torn up shreds of paper so they’d fly everywhere when she opened it. She’d be so mad as she was put up by the teachers desk for punishment. It’s a wonder we learned anything-much less graduated.
One night the six of us were riding around in Lynda’s car on basketball game night. We were drinking Heineken beer and playing ac/dc on tape deck. April was pretty loose and goofing off in the back seat. We decided to make a drive through the school parking lot and check out boys. We were driving past the English teacher when April got sick. She leaned out the window and vomited on the teacher!!!! We burned rubber leaving the parking lot. Needless to say we were in trouble and our parents were called.

Me and Jackie went to the dog tracks in Charleston one night. I drove. We were on our way on the interstate and she had to pee. I talked her into peeing on the side of the road. I told her my car would hide her. I waited until she was squatting with her pants down and I backed up to expose her and put my bright lights on her. People were honking and she was so mad!!!! But it was funny. At least to me it was funny.
We used to go down into April’s basement. Her father made homemade wine and we used to take some out with us when he wasn’t looking. We walked around town drinking it out of Dairy Queen cups. We had a softball tournament the next day. I was feeling hung over and got sick and vomited running in to home plate-what a mess!!!!!
One night me and Jackie were out and about-just goofing off. It was about two o’clock in the morning. There is a local park outside of town with a large lake. There is an island in the middle. We decided we were going to swim out to the island. Of course we didn’t have a bathing suit between us. We didn’t give it a second thought and stripped down naked. We swam out to the island. The main highway to town went right past the lake. People were honking and flashing their lights. The next thing we knew a police cruiser pulled up by our car. The officer got out and saw our clothes lying there. He yelled at us to swim back. Of course we weren’t about to do that. But there was nowhere to hide on the small island. He could see us there naked as the day we were born. But we were old enough to know better. We eventually realized he wasn’t leaving. So we swam back. He took us to the police station after we got dressed and called our parents. They had no idea we were out at two in the morning and were very upset with us. Jackie told her mom it was my idea-it was. I told my mom that it was her idea-it wasn’t. Somehow we got by with only being grounded for one week each. You think we’d learn-we didn’t. We continued to be ornery and act out the rest of our high school days.
We all turned out to be honorable and productive citizens as adults. All except for Annette who was killed on her way to college in the next town when a van hit her head-on. She was twenty years old.
This story is in memory of Annette.
