As my mother clinged to the little life she has left, she whispered a word to me.
“Logos,” she said weakly.
I needed her to say more but I know that was all the energy she had. She closed her eyes and took her last breaths. The last time I seen my mother was when I was leaving for college. That was years ago. Dylan, my best friend, and my mother were with me at the mall when a plane crashed into it. My mother was hit by a chunk of cement that fell from the ceiling. Not realizing it, Dylan and I ran to see if there were any survivors on the plane. An older man came to help too. He ran to the front of the plane to check on the pilot.
“There isn’t anyone up here. It’s like they disappeared,” the older man said.
There wasn’t a lot of people on board either. This flight was almost empty. Even the pilots were gone. What is going on?
“The building is coming down. We need to leave now,” someone shouted.
There was nothing I could do for my mother. She was already dead. I need to find what Logos is. Maybe I can find some answers of why this is going on. The ceiling began to collapse. We all ran towards an exit but I looked back at my mom. Her body was gone. She just disappeared. We walked outside, destruction as far as the eye could see. Smoke clouds rising. Fires everywhere. Complete devastation. We could hear sirens in the distance.
“Hey, does your phone have any signal?” Dylan asked me.
“No, I can’t seem to get any bars,” I said
“I what are we supposed to do then? We can’t call anybody. No rescue has come yet. Are we just gonna sit here…
“Stop your whining it’s not helping anything, all we can do now is wait,” the older man snapped. While everyone was thinking about what happened, I was to busy thinking about Logos.
“ Hey old man,” I called.
“That’s not my name. Call me Henry,” he said.
“Sorry, Henry, do you know anyone or anything called Logos?” I asked.
He stopped and looked at me with a concerned look. Placed his hand in his left pocket and answered “no”. He said no out loud but his hand told me different. I won’t dig to far…..for now.
“We need to find a phone the works. I need to see if my family is okay,” Dylan went on.
“Here you go again,” Henry snapped again. “Stop your whining. Don’t you think that we are all worried about our families? Some of us lost our family back in that crash! Pull yourself together or I will put you out of your misery myself”.
Henry must’ve been ex-military. Marine. You could see it in his walk. He definitely kept the hair cut. He has to be 6’2”. Caucasian, built like he used to lift heavy weights. Come to think of it, I’ve seen him before but I never knew his name.
“Why are you so mean to him. Lay off a little. We all lost someone but will deal with it differently,” I said to Henry.
Dylan called to me grabbing my attention. “Hey, there was a lot more of us that left the mall right? Why does it look like it’s half that.” I turned to see what he was talking about. He was right. Not only were there no children, people were disappearing all of a sudden. They’re not all leaving at once. It’s sporadic. Nothing makes sense. I need to find what Logos is. Henry knows but I’ll wait to ask again.
“I’m going to see if there is a working phone somewhere in these cars and see if there are any survivors,” Henry said. “Hey wimpy boy, come and give me a hand”.
“My name is Dylan”.
“Well nice to meet you Danielle,” Henry teased.
As they both walked towards a vehicle to see if they could find anything useful, we heard a sound that would only be heard from a creature in a Sci-Fi movie. Henry stopped and put his hand in his pocket. I need to find out what he is hiding but first what is that sound. Dylan was running back but tripped on some debris. While falling, we heard the sound again and he stopped mid-fall. He then levitated to his feet. His skin turned grey and purple veins appeared on his face. His eyes turned white. Then he spoke.
“Filthy, filthy, filthy. You are all filthy. That’s why you are still here. You all will be coming with me. Oh, where are my manners. I am darkness, the prince of the air,” he said.
Before he could say anything else, Henry took something out of his pocket, ran up to Dylan and placed his hand on his heart. Then he whispered something. His body went into convulsions while the thing shrieked as if it were in pain. Dylan’s body went limp. His complexion had returned but his warmth was gone. What ever it was, it took Dylan with it.
“What was that Henry, what did you do?” I demanded.
“I tried to save his life but I took to long,” he said.
“What was that you tried to save his life with? Who are you? You do know that when I asked you about Logos that I noticed you were hiding something? Tell me the truth. As you can see we don’t have time for secrets,” I went on with the questions.
“Please stop with all the questions. You’re making my head hurt”. He leaned up against a car. “ I thought I had some more time,” he said.
He began to explain what was going on starting with Logos. He told me that Logos is the Greek word for “the word of God”. I knew about the Holy bible but not the Logos bible. He then told me that the thing that took Dylan was a deman coming to claim more souls. I asked about the disappearances. He told me that those people are safe. They were going to be with our creator. All the children went first because they were still innocent. Well, at least I know where my mom is. I didn’t get to tell her I was sorry. That was the whole reason I came back.
Henry looked at me as if reading my mind and said “ your mother forgave you, she has been waiting on you to return back to her”. He continued to talk. “I knew your mother from church. Her and my wife were best friends. I’ve only seen you and you me when you were getting ready to leave for college. My wife, Teresa, passed away and your mother has been a great friend to me.” He went on and on about the past. All of it was starting to make sense. So this wasn’t the apocalypse. It’s judgement.
“But wait, what is that in your pocket and what does it have to do with Logos,” I asked him.
“It holds the truth, the Word, the key to life,” he said. He took a small locket from his pocket. It was heart shaped. It was alive, like it had its own heart beat. He opened it and I was blinded by the sheer glory of it.
*Gasp*
I opened my eyes to see that I was in my room at my mother’s house. It was all a dream. I could smell chocolate chip waffles and eggs with pattie sausage. My favorite. I ran out of my room into my mother’s arms. I remember we had a big fight the night before. I leave for college today so I don’t want to leave without saying I’m sorry.
“What’s wrong Lani, why are you hugging me so hard,” she gasped.
“I am so sorry mom about last night. I shouldn’t have said what I said to you. Please forgive me,” I begged.
“Oh girl, I already forgave you. Now go brush your teeth, your breathe is unforgivable,” she teased.
I started walking to my room when a man came into the kitchen. It was Henry from my dream. I went to call his name but he stopped me. Act like I’ve never seen him before, got it. He went over to give my mom a hug. I went to go change my clothes and brush my teeth. When I got to my room, I saw a book and an envelope. It was a Logos bible. I opened the envelope. The locket from my dream fell out. There was a note too. It read; “ This is the key to life. Judgement is coming.” Henry came to my door and stood there. The lights began to flicker.
“Oh no!”
