The distant tink of metal on asphalt and the hammering of rain on the garbage cans barely registered for the man in front of Josh in aeons past, before the spent shell hit the pavement. He muttered, "Oh, he got me," and dropped to his knees as he stared in shock. His clothes were stained with blood and rain. Josh held the gun in his trembling fists, his fingers unable to relax their hold. A tiny red LED flashed from the gun's butt, alerting his teammates to the fact that an officer had fired his weapon and requested their assistance.
He was startled out of his trance by a boom of thunder, and the rain kept pouring down all around him. He sprinted to his pal who had just fallen as soon as his gun clattered to the ground. He rolled Nick onto his back while holding Nick by the shoulders. Although Nick was breathing, blood started to collect in his lungs. Josh cried out desperately, "Oh God, Nick, can you hear me?" However, Nick's only answer was to simply look up at the ominous clouds, his lips twitching into a smile but his eyes now remaining fixed. Josh felt his pulse but realised he was already dead.
He observed his friend's unmoving body while seeking cover behind an awning. A few minutes later, he was gazing at the brick wall across from him and wishing his thoughts were somewhere else when the red and blue lights of police cruisers shot down the alley and caught him. "Josh, you alright?" a police officer questioned as he drew near. Josh, though, was focused on the bricks and disregarded the query. When he counted 427, he realised that this represented only 6.2% of the total bricks in the structure.
The investigation into the incident continued for three days at the station. People looked at him in an unfriendly and bewildered manner, unsure of how to react. Josh was concerned about the consequences that the public wanted to see for the charge. After killing a fellow officer, he realised his career was ended.
Josh went back to his flat since he was feeling lonely, where he made coffee and started his old computer. To learn more about the catastrophe and the weird events that preceded it, he started his study. As a result of his research, he concluded that there was a pattern of electronic manipulation and an electronically assisted mind that appeared to influence people's behaviour, making them violent and unmanageable.
Josh located the root of this deception in a mystery motel, hidden behind an olive-green door in a red brick wall. He went to the motel out of curiosity and caution and found a room with a big table. There was a dead person on it, a pencil in the eye, and a wireless transmitter close by.
As he took in the scene, he immediately experienced an odd thrill that made him feel euphoric. The sensation was unlike anything he had ever known, and he understood that the transmitter was having an impact on him. He mustered the strength to fight off the delightful sensation and its seduction.
Following the trail of affected people from the motel, he came across two teens who were under the transmitter's effect and were grinning strangely and euphorically. He locked them in a cupboard after recognising the threat they posed and thought about calling for help. But the transmitter's pleasurable effects tempted him, and he compromised his obligation.
He was overcome with joy and thought of Nick, Clara, and his profession as well. He made a valiant effort to resist the device's temptation while sitting on the floor and attempting to restore control since he knew he couldn't give in. He was aware that someone had planned this to influence people's thinking, and he wanted to put a stop to them.
He presented his research, seeking assistance from his superiors, exposing the transmitter's existence and its capacity to influence people's behaviour. The evidence was convincing enough to start an official investigation despite initial scepticism.
The transmitter was created by a renegade technologist who was experimenting with mind control technology, it became obvious as the truth came to light. The reason for Nick's death was revealed: someone had changed his thinking, making him violent and unpredictable.
The investigation resulted in the technologist's capture, ending the attempt to manipulate people's minds. Strict guidelines and safety precautions were put in place to stop further exploitation of the technology after it was seized and studied.
Josh battled the emotional effects of losing his friend and being accused of killing an officer throughout the procedure. He battled shame and loss, finding consolation in counselling and support groups. He also grew closer to Clara, who supported him during his toughest moments.
Josh's courage and tenacity ultimately resulted in the exposing and destruction of a hazardous conspiracy. Even while the experiences left scars on him, he came out of them a stronger and wiser person, driven to defend others from the pernicious impact of mind control technology.
