Halloween Night At Sunset Creek
A senior night out on Halloween isn't anything to worry about, right?
Halloween was approaching and I was dreading hanging out with my friends for the first time ever. Everyone at our school was talking about meeting up at the old creek behing the railroad tracks. Sunset Creek was always the talk of our town. There was a splendor of creepy stories in our small town about Sunset Creek. People disappearing, ghostly apparitions, and everything else in between that you can imagine. One thing for sure is that in my 6 years of living here I had not gone anywhere near that creek. It was our senior year and unfortunately, one of our high school's traditions was to take a trip to the creek on Halloween night. I was still contemplating if I would even go through with this tradition or fake a situation the night of. "Jonah!", my teacher called out my name for what might have been the 3rd time before I came to. "Huh?" I said, still in my daze of thinking about Halloween night. "Your homework, do you have it?" "Oh yea", I replied as I reached in to my bookbag to retrieve my homework. I stood up and walked to the teacher's desk to put my paper into the homework tray. The bell rang and we all shuffled our belongings to race out of the shcool. "Have a great weekend!" our teacher yelled, as we flew out the classroom door. I met up with my friends outside of the school and we all walked home. Terry & Steven were excited about the weekend's events. "Homecoming game tonight, & Sunset Creek tomorrow night I can't wait!!", Steven said. "Yea, me too!", Terry exclaimed. "You dont seem too excited, Jonah. What's up with you man?" Steven said. "Uhh, I don't know about tomorrow guys, I don't think I'll go." "Aww come on, it'll be fine!", Terry said. "I guess", I said as I walked up the steps of my house and waved goodbye to go in and get ready for the night's homecoming events.
It was the evening of Halloween and it was nearing the time that everyone was supposed to meet up at the creek. We had won our homecoming game the night prior, it was great! Now I was getting ready to head to Sunset Creek with the guys. I had put the ill feeling of going behind me last night after the homecoming game. We would all be together, hanging out...what could go wrong with so much of us around anyway, right? I grabbed my sweatshirt & pulled it over my head as I told my mom I was leaving. She was sitting on the couch with my stepdad looking for a movie to watch. "Alright, be safe honey...home by 12!" I had told her I was going to a bonfire party but didn't tell her where. I didn't need her worrying more than she already did, and plus I'd be fine. I stepped out the house and saw Terry and Steven standing there waiting on me. We started walking towards the forest behind the railroad tracks, it wasn't too far from our neighborhood.
We got to the spot and there was already a good amount of our classmates there. The fire pit was lit, marshmallows were toasting, laughter and chatter filled the air along with the smoked wood aroma. We took a seat on one of the logs. People were continuosly coming as we chatted and were having a great time. I couldn't believe I was so scared before, everything was going well, it was a fun time. That is until I thought I heard a shrilling scream coming from the wooded forest right behing the creek. I looked around to see if anyone else had caught it too. Everyone continued on as if they hadn't heard a thing. I brushed it off and thought nothing of it. A few minutes passed before I heard the screaming again. This time some few others looked around with eyes wide open asking if we had heard that. Suddenly I saw a ghostly figure appear right on the water of the creek and started pointing and shouting, "What in the world is that?!" Everyone looked in the direction I was pointing and got frightened. But as soon as we had seen it the ghostly figure disappeared right into the water in a swift motion. It was around 11:00 and we had seen enough despite the apparition disappearing. We were starting to clean up to get out of there and this one guy Noah wanted to "inspect", the creek to see if he could find anything in there. "You're crazy, don't go near that creek Noah!" his girlfriend Sadie yelled out at him as he was walking towards it. "Come on, it's nothing" he said as he smiled, amused by his girlfriend's fear. He went towards the creek and crouched down to look. He walked all around it and said, "See, nothing!" He was walking back towards the group and we thought everything was fine.
"Hey, has anyone seen Noah?", Sadie asked while looking around frantically. We looked toward the creek and realized that Noah's boots were sitting in the grass. We walked up towards them and then looked into the creek in shock as we could see Noah's face in the creek as if it was a reflection before it suddenly disappeared. He looked as if he was yelling and reaching out to us but it was too late. It's like the creek swallowed him up. I always had a bad feeling about that place. I mean why wouldn't I? With all the stories I had heard over the years I finally knew that my initial fear wasn't for no reason. That night 911 was called in some efforts to possibly save Noah somehow. But nothing was found, no trace of his body at all. Just his boots remained and we finished off our high school year with one less peer. Sunset creek was no joke!
