The sun was setting when Bexley Marshall pushed open the gates of the cemetery. The tall woman strode into the cemetery with a sombre look on her face and her eyes filled with tears that she refused to let fall.
Weaving as gracefully as a ballerina through the tombstones, she finally stopped at Addilyn's. Addilyn Marshall was gorgeous. She had these stunning midnight black curls, her eyes were like the rarest cut emeralds, and she was the kindest person this world had ever been blessed with. She was taken too soon and she was everything to the Marshall witch. Bexley leaned down and placed gently, upon her grave, a bouquet of Lilies.
"Bexles!" Her sweet voice had haunted her for a year.
"Hi, Addy. You always did say roses were cliché." The blonde woman laughed softly. For a few minutes, she just sat in silence. She never could think of anything to say.
"I'm serious, everyone gives each other roses. How are they special when everyone has them?"
"Mental note; never get Addilyn roses, or she may throw them back at me." Bexley teased with a smirk. Addilyn laughed a sweet bell-like sound and gently shoved Bexley.
"Shut up!"
"So, um, I finally got the house you wanted. It's everything you wanted, you'd love it, Addy." Bexley smiled slightly thinking about that house. Addilyn had always dreamed of raising their family within that beautiful home. "Do you remember the first time we saw that place? We were driving back from the chapel and when you saw that place, your entire face lit up."
"I just know it Bexles! That's the place where we'll raise the perfect family." Addilyn sighed leaning back in her seat.
"In case you've forgotten, we can't exactly have any babies without some help." Bexley smiled at her wife in amusement.
"We will. I don't care how. We will have the perfect family, you'll see."
"Addy, any children we have will be cursed. If we ever have a family they will be cursed just like me. Like us." Bexley said, her tone sad at the thought of never giving Addilyn children.
"You better not be backing out of this marriage on me now." The black-haired woman laughed lightly. Her eyes, while amused, also held a certain amount of trepidation.
"Of course not Mrs Marshall," Bexley said before taking her lover's hand.
"Good, because I'm not going to leave you."
"You should have walked away long before then, Addy." Tears welled in her eyes at the memories. "It's my fault your dead. I should have stayed away from you. I should have done so much more to keep you away."
"Stop pushing me away! It's not going to work! I don't want to leave you." She screamed, tears were streaming down her face. She had passed angry a long time ago, now she was just pissed.
"I don't care if this isn't what you want! This is the only way to keep you safe!" Bexley's breath caught in her throat. Her eyes stung with unshed tears, her throat violently constricting.
"Keep me safe from what? From you?" A cruel laugh escaped her mouth. "I'm not a china doll, Bexley. You can't keep me locked away in a glass case."
"If that's what it takes to keep you safe, then maybe I will." Bexley looked at her beloved. Tears staining her rosy cheeks, her eyes wild and her face fallen. "Addy, I will keep you safe. You need to stay away from me."
"Then walk away. Walk away right now and don't look back." Addilyn spoke boldly. Because they both knew at that moment that neither of them would move.
"I never did walk away. In another world I did. In another world, you would still be breathing."
"It's the only way!"
"No. It's not the only way because it's not an option. You are not killing yourself to save me."
"Why? Think about it, if I die you can evade the darkness."
"The darkness is going to come for me in 30 days. In those 30 days, I just want to spend some time with my wife and not think about the curse."
"You won't have to think about it? If you kill me-"
"I would be killing myself, Addilyn. I am going to let the darkness take me, and you will live. Because, at least this way, you'll still be alive and breathing."
"Don't get me wrong. You were the greatest thing in my life. There's that selfish part of me that never would've let you go. No matter how many times we fought. You were mine."
"Bexles!" Addilyn screamed as the taller woman swept her off her feet. "Put me down."
"I can't do that. A queen should never walk." Bexley laughed, readjusting her grip on the petite woman. A sweet giggle left the green-eyed girls' lips.
"If I'm a queen then what does that make you?" She asked, relaxing into the comforting arms.
"Well my dear queen, I am the brave knight." Bexley's blue eyes twinkled in amusement.
"You're an idiot."
"I'm your idiot." The two girls smiled fondly at each other. Addilyn leaned up in Bexley's arms and placed a small, chaste kiss on her cheek.
"I loved you, Addy."
"I love you too, Bex."
Bexley let out a sigh before leaning back onto the cool ground. Her eyes closed and a single tear slipped down her cheek. A whole year she had been left alone. A year without Addilyn's sweet bell-like laugh or soft smile. And it was all her fault.
"Addy, I said, go!"
"And I said, I'm not leaving you!"
An animalistic growl escaped Bexley's throat, her eyes flashing a vibrant violet. The darkness had come for her and there was nothing she could do. Bexley was trying as hard as she could to contain the unrestrained magic in her system.
"You should've listened, for once in your life!" The words left Bexley's mouth without her permission. Her arm swung out, a blast of magic flung Addilyn, and several objects, into the wall. Quickly, righting herself, Addilyn stood with a fierce glare.
"Bexley, snap out of it. You can do this!"
"I wasn't able to, Addy. I was supposed to be stronger. I was supposed to protect you."
"I can't, don't you understand? There is no other way!" Bexley screamed, holding her head in her hands.
"Yes, there is! You know what you have to do!" Addilyn cried, attempting to throw Bexley away with her own magic. Of course, she knew there was no point. She was nowhere near as powerful as the other Marshall witch.
"I can't! I won't let my last moments be me killing you!" Another wave of pain shot through her body. The darkness coming faster and hitting her harder than she had ever felt.
"Stop being so bloody stubborn and listen to me! You are good, and no curse can change that! Fight it, Bexley!"
"I tried, Addy. I really did try. I just wasn't strong enough."
For a second Addilyn thought she had broken through. That perhaps she and Bexley were strong enough to beat this together. But her hope was quickly crushed when Bexley let out an inhuman scream and her eyes turned purple.
"No!" She screamed, falling to her knees and clutching her head. A blast of pure magic shot through the room. Pictures fell from the walls, the windows and mirror shattered, glass spilling everywhere, and Addilyn's body flung into the wall like a rag doll.
"I should have tried harder. I should have left you alone that first day. They all said I was a monster and that I was destined to destroy you. They were right."
Bexley stopped screaming and looked up, her face immediately turned ashen. Addilyn's body lay crumpled onto the ground, her limbs limp and blood pouring out of her skull. A large cut adorned her head causing blood to pool around her head.
Bexley scrambled to pull her jacket off and rush over to Addilyn. "Hey. Hey, wake up." Bexley said pushing the bundled-up jacket onto her wife's head. "Hey, open your eyes. Addilyn? Addy?"
"I've seen many terrible things in my life. But the worst sight I've ever seen was my hands covered in your blood."
Bexley gently slapped the dark-haired girls face. With fumbling fingers, she attempted to find Addilyn's heartbeat. She held her breath waiting for the steady beat of her heart. Bexley choked on a sob when she realised what she did.
"No, no, no. Addy, open your eyes, please. Please don't leave me." Sobs wracked the witch's body. Tears were streaming down her face as she attempted to shake the smaller witch awake.
"Addy, you can't leave me. I didn't mean it. I can't do this without you! I love you. Addy, please! Addy? Addy!"
"When you didn't open your eyes, it was as if, all the colour from my world had been drained. You were my life, Addy. Why didn't we get a happily ever after?"
Every memory of Addilyn and Bexley seemed to flash before Bexley's eyes. Every hug. Every 'I love you. Every kiss. Every moment that had tortured Bexley's dreams for a year.
"Catch me Bexles!"
"Always Addy."
Bexley missed that smile. It was a million-watt smile that never failed to brighten up Bexley's day.
"It doesn't matter what they think, I'll always love you, Bexley."
She did, there was never a moment where Bexley doubted that.
"If you let me fall, I swear to God, Addy."
"I'd never let you fall Bexley."
She treasured every memory with Addilyn, after all, that was all she left. Memories and her voice in her head.
"You know how dangerous this is right?" Bexley called after Addilyn. She and Bexley were wandering around when Addilyn got the brilliant idea to walk on the roof.
"Is big, bad Bexley scared?" Addilyn teased, her eyes bright and her smile full of mischief.
"Of you falling? Yes."
"Silly Bexley. Don't you know I'm safest with you?"
Addilyn had given her life that day. Addilyn had given her life to save Bexley's. Bexley got to evade her family's curse but Addilyn had to pay the price. They didn't deserve this, they deserved a big house. A family to come home to at night. They deserved each other.
"How did I get so lucky to have you in my life?"
"God, you're so cringy Bexles. You sound like someone from a rom-com."
"I'm being serious here, Addy. Stop laughing at me!"
"It's getting dark now Addy. I have to get going, but I'll be back soon." She said, getting up from her spot. With that Bexley took a deep breath and began to move away from Addilyn's grave. She turned, still walking, and called "I love you! So much."
She continued walking and for a second she felt like Addilyn was right there next to her.
"I love you more, Bexley!"
