Gothic Queen
A.H. Mittelman
There was a small town in California surrounded by mountains called Idyllwild. In this town, there was an even friendlier neighborhood called The Peaksburough residences. It was filled with colorful houses, vibrant and perfectly manicured gardens, and friendly neighbors. The neighbors were so friendly, in fact, people from outside the city would always talk about how creepy it was.
In this overly friendly part of town there lived a girl who didn’t quit fit in. This girls name was Onyx. Onyx was a gloomy, depressed and nihilistic gothic girl who claimed to love nothing but made an exception for her deep love for all things sinister, dark, grotesque and eldritch. She always made sure to talk using her most lugubrious voice, just to drive the point home that she was, in fact, not of the “upbeat, pleasant or happy crowd” everyone else conformed too. She had long, flowing black hair she had to perfect with a hot comb, pale skin covered in a pale colored makeup enhanced by black eyeliner, and eyes that sparkled like glitter hitting the sunlight, which was despite her dark and gloomy appearance. She was beautiful, and when she was younger, she was a polite and intelligent girl, educated in every subject from English to math. Now she was rife with attitude and was flunking math. She still got good grades in history and English, however. But despite all her gloomy greatness, Onyx was often made fun of in school and had no friends.
Onyx had just gotten off the bus and took one last look at the wonderful gray clouds blotting out the sun before heading inside. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, listened to the wind rustle, let go of her breath, then opened the doors and her eyes at the same time. As Onyx was walking through the hallways of her school, a group of skinny, blonde bullies approached her. One was carrying books while twirling her finger through her hair, and the other two bullies were mindlessly chattering about who the cutest boy was. The one twirling her hair, a horribly bratty girl named Amber who thought she was better and prettier then everyone, had a steaming hot cup of coffee sitting on top of her books. With a malicious grin, Amber deliberately bumped into Onyx, causing the hot liquid to spill all over her clothes.
"Oops, accident loser," she said mockingly, and the other two girls burst into laughter. Onyx felt her heart sink into her chest as she watched them walk away, leaving her standing there, drenched in coffee.
She ran to the bathroom and grabbed paper towels to try and dry off her shirt. A minute later she was crying and using the same paper towels to wipe away tears.
She straightened herself up, and told herself “no more!” Now feeling enraged and angry, Onyx decided that she had had enough. She decided she was going to find others in the school who were also lonely and had no friends. She believed that together, they could protect each other from the cruelty of the bitch sisters, as she had dubbed Amber and her flock of foul sheep. Onyx took out her black lipstick and wrote on the mirror, “We’re coming for you Amber. We’re all coming for you,” then she moved to the next mirror and wrote on that one “See you in hell, Amber. Ha ha ha!”
A couple weeks had passed, and Onyx's search for kindred spirits was in full steam. She had found a group of kids who, like her, felt like outsiders. They were drawn to Onyx's strength and leadership, and Onyx discovered a new talent. She was good at giving speeches and pursuading people to do what she wanted. She was a natural born leader, and she loved to lead.
Onyx had explained to each one of her newfound friends why wearing black was so relatable to her. She spoke about how black represented the darkness that she carried within, the sadness and depression that she sometimes felt as an outcast. Her friends listened intently, all understanding her pain.
Onyx told her friends at lunch to meet her right before school ended. She had something important to say. Right before the bell had wrung, her friends were gathered around her out front.
She first told her friends to quickly run across the street and grab a hot cup of coffee. They obediently followed the orders of their new leader, Queen Onyx.
“Listen carefully my friends. You are now my brothers and sisters, we are united. We are now family, sworn to protect each other. I, like many of you, have been bullied all my life. I used to be the happiest kid on the planet, until I met all the assholes, dicks, floozy’s, witches, harlots, and creeps society had to offer. Each of my bullies was worse then the last. But that was before we were an army, united to protect each other. It was before we had our society, The Great Uprising, to fight back against the eldritch horrors of the elitists, the privileged, and the ones who felt superior. Divided we fail, united we stand strong. We will rid the school of bullies, protect each other from these barely sentient monsters. We are one, we are one,” Onyx started chanting. Her friends started chanting “We are one,” as well and stomping their feet, the vibrations reverberated off of the schools brick walls.
“Become one with me,” Onyx said and handed her black lipstick to one of the students to put on. One by one, they passed around the lipstick and used it not just on their lips, but on their faces as war paint. The last student handed a now empty lipstick container back to Onyx. She tossed it into the garbage.
“Welcome to the uprising,” she shouted with her hands in the air. She got an uproarious applause, full of shouting and whistling.
The bell rang, the doors opened. Students were exiting the doors like salmon trying to swim upstream.
“Keep your eyes open for your bullies, people. Today we stand united. Watch for Amber, that’s my monster,” Onyx said.
“Mine, too…” someone shouted.
“There she is, there’s Amber,” someone else shouted and the crowd of gothic students surrounded Amber and her two friends.
“Wh… wh… what is this?” Amber stammered. Onyx slowly approached Amber.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t the famous Bitch Sisters,” Onyx said.
“How dare you,” Amber said and lurched towards Onyx. She was held back by the other students.
“Lindsey, Harper, do something,” Amber shouted.
Lindsey and Harper looked around and saw the size of the crowd that was now standing against them.
“Yah, um no,” Lindsey said and turned to walk away.
“Harper?” Amber said frightened, her voice quivering.
“I’m out,” Harper said, spun around and walked off.
“But I’m popular! And I’m pretty,” Amber shouted at her friends.
“Oops,” Onyx said as she bumped into Amber and poured her scolding hot coffee onto Amber’s head.
“AAAHHH, that could leave burns. If it does I’ll sue,” Amber shouted.
“Oops,” all the gothic students said simultaneously as they each threw their coffee at Amber.
“I’ll sue all of you,” Amber shouted and ran off crying. Amber was never seen or heard from again that day, and wished she never had to return to school.
The next day, all of Onyx’s new friends came dressed in black and brought makeup, several of whom also brought black lipstick to replace Onyx’s. They asked Onyx to paint their faces with black makeup to symbolize their unity and support for one another, especially their new leader, Onyx.
Onyx agreed, and told them some of their clothing was still to bright and happy to be truly gothic.
The group headed to Hot Topic, a store famous for its gothic clothing and accessories. They spent hours browsing through racks of black clothes, finding items that reflected their new community. Onyx guided them, helping each friend to choose an outfit that made them feel strong and empowered.
As they walked out of the store, their new gothic appearances turned heads, but they didn't care. They wore their darkness with pride, knowing that it represented their resilience and their refusal to conform to society's expectations. They knew they were a united community now, and they’d declare war on the world if they had to, a war that would last until bullies were ended and the tormented were accepted.
Onyx and her friends arrived at school the next morning, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. They’d not been able to get even with all their bullies the day before, because a lot of the bullies snuck out of the back of the school.
One by one, they approached the bullies who had tormented them for so long. Each friend poured a cup of coffee on the bully, just as Amber had done to Onyx. Most of the bullies were shocked and couldn't believe what was happening, and the bullies that had tried to retaliate were punished with more coffee from other gothic kids, or attacked with food or covered in milk. The bullies had never expected their victims to stand up to them.
Amber, who was sitting alone feeling abandoned by Lindsey and Harper, saw what was going on and took off before the other students could find her and humiliate her again. She ran home, shaking and scared. She wasn’t used to being alone, and wondered if this was how the so called losers she picked on always felt.
Amber was now sitting at home and talking to herself. Amber was a self-centered narcissist, and couldn't comprehend how the tables had turned. She was the rightful queen of the school, not Onyx, she thought. She realized that her sense of superiority had blinded her to the pain she caused others. From that day forward, the bullies never dared to mess with anyone again. Onyx and her friends had become a force to be reckoned with. Amber wanted revenge, but how? She wasn’t smart or creative enough to come up with a plan on her own, and without her two evil friends by her side to plot with her, revenge day might never come.
As time went on, Onyx and her friends remained inseparable. They formed a tight-knit group, always looking out for one another and protecting those who were being bullied. They changed their name to The Guardians of the Outcasts, the defenders of those who were pushed around and treated like losers. Onyx also collected enough money on GoFundMyself to start her own gothic temple of the same name, The Guardians of the Outcasts. Anyone who was an outcast was welcome to come to Onyx’s temple for protection. Onyx eventually wrote a book for her goth followers, called Gothorium, that preached unity and togetherness amongst the outcasts, inspiring many goths from around the world to join her temple and fight for her cause.
Onyx was hailed as The Gothic Queen, a title that she claimed proudly. She even bought a black crown to wear, which was made using obsidian. She had transformed her own pain into strength, and her friends stood beside her every step of the way. She now had an international army of outcasts, and together they would change the world and free it from bullies.
They also created a safe haven at their school, a place where everyone, regardless of their differences, could find acceptance and friendship. Anyone who needed a friend could find any gothic member of The Guardians of the Outcasts, now Guardians for short, and they would be defended. The gothic kids had stood up for so many of the bullied kids, they became known as The Gothic Knights of Justice
Onyx’s society, The Guardians, are still around today, dispensing their own brand of justice on anyone who’s a bully, and protecting the weak who can’t protect themselves. The Gothic Queen Onyx continues to teach the world that unity and empathy could conquer even the darkest of forces, and every day more people join her temple and donate money to her cause in order to have her protection. Now, everybody loves Onyx.

Onyx was a great name choice! Loved all of this!!
I love transformative stories where a character finds new purpose in their life. In this case, she became a strong force that showed no signs of giving up or giving it to the bullies. Great story, Alex.
Whoaaaa! Onyx is soooo cool! She has a temple, wrote a book, formed a group! Such a powerful story!
Fantastic writing Alex! I loved how the Goth tribe stood up for the underdogs! Great work!
