Emptiness

I was just a naive 8 year Old, bursting with excitement and dreams, when my world was shattered. I had rushed home from school, eager to share the thrilling news with my mom. I had been chosen to skip a grade and take the Common Entrance exams! But as I searched the empty house, my heart sank. Where was she?

My aunts somber face told me something was terribly wrong. She led me to the hospital, where I found my mum lying weak and frail in bed. The sight of my mum, once a pillar of strength and love, now lying weak and helpless in bed, pierced my heart like a dagger, leaving me feeling lost and shattered.

As I reflect on that heart wrenching day, I can only begin to fathom the depth of my mothers suffering. Yet, despite her own unbearable pain, she summoned every last ounce of her strength to sheild me from her agony. With a fragile smile, she lit up the hospital room, her eyes brimming with tears as I innocently caressed the baby bump, unaware of the impending tragedy. She tenderly wiped away my tears, her own heart shattering in silence. In that moment, her selfless love and unwavering strength have forever etched an indelible mark on my soul.

I pleaded with her to recover, to come home and fulfill her promise to help me with my exams. She smiled weakly, her eyes brimming with tears, and whispered a gentle promise: ‘Tomorrow, my child, I’ll be home. But tomorrow never dawned for her. The next day, my world shattered into a million pieces. I was engulfed by a sea of sorrowful faces, and my aunt’s heart wrenching wail still haunts me.

My mom, my beacon of hope, my everything, was cruelly snatched away. I was left alone, my dreams and excitement extinguished by an unbearable grief that consumed me, leaving a desolate emptiness that seemed to have no end.
