There weren't always dragons in the Valley.
That came later. Much later.
For thousands of years the Gods of Cafri had ruled without a care in the world. The beautiful and vibrant land was plagued by greed , violence and hunger. The Gods sat back and watched the world become a disastrous place.
Although it was supposed to be forbidden , the Gods had their way with the humans of Cafri which resulted in hybrid children who were as beautiful as the morning sun , stronger than a raging bull , more confident than the gods themselves and so selfish no mirror could have shown them their flaws.
The land of Cafri’s natural resources were hoarded by the rich and the children of the Gods. This lawlessness went on for thousands of years slowly stripping the land of its beauty and making the people despise the Gods.
Wars against the hybrid children were forged by desperate and angry dwellers of Cafri, while the hybrid children fought amongst themselves in honor of their parents.
Those without strength or money were left to kill and scrounge for anything they could get.
Eventually , over the years people began to spread out across Cafri , dividing themselves and the lands between class and status.
Even with the wars that raged on and the brokenness of the people , the gods continued to rule loosely and without order.
Rather than have their existing children use their Strength to plow the land for farmers and build proper buildings for those in the countryside , the gods felt that having children with the lower class citizens of Cafri would even out the playing field.
The children the Gods had with the common people of Cafri were just as beautiful as the affluent children , if not more.
The Gods' more affluent and established children were furious and they protested and cried that there was no way to tell the difference between lower class children and them. This led to the mark of piti. A white scar surrounding the outside of one eye , created to separate the lower class children of gods from the more affluent ones.
The years continued to pass and nothing seemed to change. The mixing of hybrids and humans had permanently changed the DNA of the Cafri people throughout the years , with more than half of them containing the mark of piti.
There’s a legend that explains the consequences of the Gods stepping too far out of line. The Last resort is an ancient power so old that the Gods themselves were unsure of its existence.
The Gods began to forget the fear of judgement.
This was a mistake.
It had been millions of years since the gods had been punished and any judgment of the gods began to sound like a fairytale. They had forgotten about the ancient power of the dragons , who were always watching and waiting for the day to intervene.
At least that’s how the story goes.
My whole life has been nothing but legends and stories. Old wise tales that people need to believe in so that their lives can mean something. If there’s anything I’ve learned from my 18 years on this earth , it’s that hope is dangerous. My name is Babu, but all of my friends call me babs. I live in a little village called morsha on the far side of Cafri , often referred to as the wrong side by the moonsiders. The moon side is the cities of Cafri that have money , status and wealthy families. We are split by an invisible line that becomes clear once you cross it. Farsiders are only allowed to come to the moon side for work and that’s it. The village I live in is a considerable distance from the far side and so we make our money mostly from selling crops that we grow. Most far siders bear the mark of piti and the white scar makes it uncomfortably clear exactly who you are and where your from. I sometimes wonder why the gods hated us and all the questions I would ask if ever got the chance. But hope is dangerous, and so I focus on the here and now , surviving in a world full of dragons.
