There was a frozen pond that covered up memories on that old sixty-five-acre farmland. The pond where she used to fish with her uncle. The same pond that her kids were supposed to learn how to fish, the same pond where they would have been able to fish with him. The same pond that she wanted them to fish with her. The same pond where they could have fished with their dad when he was home.

She had just lost her uncle, and she had not even been able to say goodbye. She was not told until months after he had passed away that he was gone. She never had the chance to talk to him one last time or to see him before he was burned into nothing more than ashes.

Now, for the first time being back to this beautiful pond where she had so many happy memories, she is also filled with sad memories of what could have been. Memories of all the fun she had growing up.

She found herself thinking about all the memories he could have made with her kids, now old enough to fish with him. She decided to make sure that nothing gets in the way of her making those memories with her children.

“Mama? Why is fishing so important? Fish are so gross! I do not want to touch them!” Harley asked her mama.

“It is not about the fishing, not really. It is about the family time you spend with your loved ones. It is about talking to each other and having fun with one another. It is about sharing something special with someone you love. Do you understand sweetheart?”

“Yes, mommy I understand.”

“So, are you excited to go fishing with mommy and brother?”

“Yes, mommy! We make memories, right mama?”

‘Yes, baby! We will make so many memories together, that our memories will have their own memories!”

“Yay!”

Her son came running into the room that they were in, yelling he was ready to go. Her daughter yelled, she was ready to go jumping up and down with her arms waving in the air.

Later, they arrive at the pond where they were about to make many happy memories.

“Mommy, it beautful!”

“Yeah, mom. It looks pretty cool.”

“Oh, no.”

“What wrong mom?”

“It is frozen honey. It is not ready to be fished in quite yet.”

“Do we have to leave mommy?”

“Nah, babe. Mommy has another idea in mind. I may need your help though; you want to help mommy?”

“Me want to help mama!”

“Me too mama!”

She laughed, “Okay, here is what I need you to do.”

She bent down to their levels and whispered in their ears what she wanted each of them to do. First her son because he was the little man of the house. Then her daughter, her little princess got to hear her list of what to get ready. Both kids were excited and could not wait to get back to the pond to see what their mom had in store for them.

Back at the pond, the kids were more than eager to find out what their mom was going to do with them they brought over all the things they picked up from the car. There she sat up all the chairs and got the blankets. They got the near by fire pit ready so they could be warm and roast marshmallows. They took pictures together and sang songs, told stories and jokes. They had the most fun laughing and playing together.

The smiles on their faces took her back to thoughtful and peaceful memories at the pond when she was much younger. And she knew they could make new family traditions and memories together.
