“Who are we kidding, coach?” Danver Polight asked.

“What’s the matter?” Coach Harrington asked.

“No one cares about this sport in America unless your kids kick it around at parks on Saturday mornings.”

“Polight…where is this coming from, exactly?”

Polight paced around the coach’s desk.

“I mean we’ve tried with Becks and Messi. Do you remember Adu? Ted Lasso boosted us a great deal but come on, just one good show? We need more firepower.”

“What do you suggest?”

“I think we should raise the score count to six points for each goal.”

Coach Harrington folded his arms. “Okay. Like American football?”

“Exactly!”

“I still don’t think that will be enough,” Harrington admitted.

“Why not?”

“There’s going to have to be an overhaul around the world….”

“So, they’ll adapt the major league basketball council approved of three pointers and dunks. Maybe…maybe we can have a freebie in using our hands.”

“Now, you’re pushing it. I can see the point change, but the whole idea of soccer is to strategize with your feet mostly. Use your body…use your head!”

“This should be something we should take up with the other teams and the body that governs professional fútbol.”

“We won’t get far?”

“Why not?” Polight asked, his head canted slightly.

“I’ve motioned for a score change before. I petitioned for there to be a clock that winds down instead of up…all to no avail. There are more people who are enjoying this sport. It’s not just kids, either. Adults are discovering soccer or as you say fútbol in America. As long as we continue to build myths and heroes in this game, it will sustain itself.”

“Maybe we can have a rugby crossover where we can palm the ball.”

“No.”

“We’ve gotta do something, Coach. There’s so much money flowing elsewhere.”
