Depths of Insanity

By Kal AlveyPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

At the end of time all the stars are going out, all the planets are turning to dust. Humanity is one of the last living things in cosmos, and even they are on the brink of extinction. In a distant corner of one of the last remaining galaxies, a notorious criminal named Jake was serving time in a maximum security prison. However, little did he know that his life was about to take a dark and sinister turn.

One day, he was approached by a mysterious government official who offered him a deal. If Jake agreed to pilot a submarine on a dangerous mission to the barren moon of Xarax, he would earn his freedom. Jake truly did not trust anyone, especially not someone from the government that had imprisoned him, but he desired freedom, no matter the cost. The official warned Jake of the dangers he would face on the moon, but he was desperate to escape prison and agreed to the mission.

Jake was placed upon a transport vessel on a two week journey to Xarax, a barren moon in the Karlac galaxy cluster. It was a jaw dropping site as the moon was around a planet with a perpetual storm around the world forming a ring. Just outside of this ring was the moon in question, a dark, frozen ball that supposedly had liquid water beneath its icy facade. Once they landed on the moon they handed Jake a manual and said "Good luck." a bit shook at the rush to leave he boarded the submarine and set off into the unknown depths of the moons icy oceans. As he explored the desolate world, he began to feel a growing sense of unease. it was becoming clear why they left in such a hurry. The silence was deafening and the darkness seemed to be closing in around him.

Jake was proficient with all forms of vehicles, and as unsure as he was of this mission to investigate and send reports back to some suits he was happy to be in control of something again. With a deep breath he decided to make the most of this small freedom and pointed the nose of the sub to the depths and sped off into shadow.

As the days passed, strange things began to happen. The equipment on board the submarine started to malfunction and strange, alien creatures became attracted to the vessel. At first Jake was intrigued, but soon the creatures started to become increasingly hostile. Jake soon realized that he had been lured to Xarax for a sinister purpose. The government officials had known of the ancient, cosmic horrors that lay beneath the moon's surface and they had sent him there to awaken them.

Jake's mind was plagued by nightmares and hallucinations as the horrors of Xarax took hold of him. He felt himself slowly losing his grip on reality, and as the submarine plunged deeper into the abyss, he was faced with an impossible decision. Does he try and escape, or does he end it all and hope that the creatures of the deep return to their slumber beneath the ice?

With a final burst of willpower, Jake made the choice to sacrifice himself and destroy the submarine, hoping to prevent the awakening of the ancient horrors. As the vessel came apart at the seems, Jake was overcome by the pressure and consumed by the darkness. The horrors of Xarax were sealed away once more.

Years later, rumors of strange happenings on Xarax began to resurface, and many wondered if the horrors had truly been silenced. But the truth of what occurred on that barren moon remained a mystery, lost to the voids of space.
