Approximately 1500 miles to the northwest in a Montana town known as Whitefish, there was a woman named Charity that was married to some mechanic twice her age. Why she married that guy wasn’t a mystery to me; he did have money. However, I knew exactly why she had invited me over that day. She knew that I was leaving for 7 months and wanted to see me one last time before my trip. I honestly didn’t know whether or not her husband knew about our rendezvous, and I was always afraid to ask because if she said “no”, I might feel guilty about making love to her while he was away. I image that they simply have an open relationship and she likes to have sex with someone her own age sometimes. I open the door to Olivia’s house and give her a peck on the lips. Her short red hair was very shiny today; more so than usual. She smelled like peppermint. A new scented lotion maybe? I have to admit that there was always something more enjoyable about a married woman being attracted to me. I wouldn’t have been as turned-on if she were single.

“Mark is going to be home in 3 days. It’s a shame you can’t stay until then.”

“she began to kiss my neck.”

“You don’t waste any time, do you?

“We don’t have much time, do we?”

“Transport shuttle doesn’t take off until noon tomorrow”, I said as I ran my hands through her hair.

I pulled her away from my neck so that I could look into her eyes for a few seconds. She was so beautiful. I wasn’t in love with her, but I was really going to miss her and I don’t just mean the sex. She was also a true friend at a time when I just didn’t have many.

“We have enough time to enjoy this.” I kissed her lips slowly almost as if we were actually a loving couple, Our clothes were still on, but it wouldn’t be that way for much longer.

You’re probably thinking that I’m some kind of jerk for having sex with another man’s wife. Well, maybe I am but I figure every man should have at least one woman in his life and ideally, he should have three. Two of which should be completely expendable. He should have his number one woman, which is a girlfriend or possibly even a spouse; a number two girl that’s more of a female friend that he can get advice from; and finally, he should have an attractive female that he can totally have his way with for some hot steamy sex whenever they both feel the need. The number one woman may or may not be his wife, but she is the woman that he is truly devoted too on an emotional level. He might not have much sex with number one, but he truly loves her and would do almost anything to keep her even if it means getting rid of the other two. The number two gal is only a friend really, but she might be someone that he has had intercourse with a few times in the past so they got it out of their systems. She’s the one that tells him to buy his girlfriend the purple blouse for Valentine’s day or not to apologize after a fight because his girlfriend was being a bitch. You must be careful with the number two gal though – some of them might be trying to sabotage your relationship so that they can move in. Girl number three is really just someone that you keep around to do all the naughty things that girl number one won’t do. The thing is, there needs to be an understanding that girl number three will never ever be a girl number one for you. She’s like a sex toy and she knows it and is okay with it because you’re also her sex toy in most cases. I’ve had all three types of women at some point in my life, but right now, I only had Livy. She was a kind of mix between a number two girl and a number three girl. She would never be number one, but we both knew that. At least, I think we both knew that.

After sex, we were both exhausted. I was really impressed with what Livy had done with the place. There were lit candles on each of the two nightstands. We both lay there in bed holding each other. I don’t know what she was thinking, but it felt good to have someone to hold close to me.

“14 months months is a long time.” She said.

“Not really considering that we are talking about another star system. Just 100 years ago it would’ve taken thousands of years to get to Pegasus. “ I replied.

“It’s long enough to forget about a person though.”

“Aren’t you married?”

“Yeah, I’m married to my husband’s job just like he is.”

“If he didn’t work so hard, you wouldn’t be in such a nice place. If I had gone to school to become a starship engine mechanic, I’d probably be rich now as well.”

“I see him for about 1 month at a time and then he just leaves. He’s gone for months repairing vessels. When he does get back, I feel as though I am sleeping with a stranger. I need someone that is going to be here for me all of the time. “

“You should look into Erosgear. I hear it works really well.” I said.

“NO WAY, I’m not letting anyone mess around with my brain. Besides, it’s no substitute for the real thing.”

She smiles and gives me a kiss on the lips.

“So are you going to replace me once I leave.” I ask.

“Like I said…14 months is a long time. I’m sure you’ll understand.”

“I do. Believe me. There’s something that I’ve wanted to ask you about Mark and your … current situation. I suppose I don’t have much to lose by asking now. I kept putting it off because…”

“He knows, Eric.”

“Really? Well, that takes a load of guilt off of me. I always thought that you were kinda messing around behind his back. Ya know, without his knowledge.”

She laughs and steps out of bed and begins to extinguish some of the candles on the dresser.

“He doesn’t know know, ya know? But…he knows…”

“You mean he has a pretty good idea that someone is fucking his wife when he’s gone, but has no evidence.”

“Hey, we don’t fuck – we make love, honey. Do you kiss your mama with that mouth? Look…I think that he knows but allows it because it keeps me happy. He knows that I can’t leave him too. In his eyes, you’re just a tool to keep me busy while he’s away.

“I thought you said that he didn’t “know know”.”

He doesn’t know who you are but he knows about the idea of you and he allows it. He could easily afford to have an investigator follow you home and discover all kinds of things about you, but this hasn’t happened because whoever is making love to his wife is just a distraction for now.”

“Is that what you think of me?”

“Of course not…”

“You’re the man that I would be with if I hadn’t met him first.”

I look at her with dubious eyes.

“That’s got to mean something, Eric. Besides, don’t pretend like you aren’t at least talking to other women.”

“Well…look at the time.”

I finally locate my clothes in the dim candle light and begin to get dressed.

“I should get going. I still have to say my farewells to be niblings.”

“You’re such a manwhore! You ARE talking to other women!” She laughs and throws a hand full of the peppermints at me.

“Ouch.” I run over to her and spank her left cheek really hard then I spin her around and kiss her. This kiss was different though. It reminded me of the kiss Heather gave me right before I went off to war. We knew it would be our last kiss for a long time and maybe our last kiss ever. I held her tightly in my arms and she slowly raised her own arms around my neck. Her breath smelled like peppermint which was not surprising and she still had the scented lotion smell that I would never forget.

“You can’t leave. I’m gonna go crazy.” She tears up a bit.

“I’m going to miss you too.” She places her head against my chest and we just held each other. There was no kissing for at least 2 minutes. No, witty Banter. Just holding.
