The ketogenic or the keto diet plan which comprises high fats, moderate proteins, and very little carbohydrates has become a favorite due to its effectiveness in the weight loss process and other associated health benefits. Said in this way, the question that follows is What does the science say?

Its objective is to induce the ketogenic state in the body in which it utilizes fats as a source of energy and not carbohydrates. This in turn will cause you to lose a lot of weight in the process especially if you adopt this tradition for a short time only.

Other research shows that keto can enhance the level of sensitivity of insulin and, hence, could be helpful for patients with type 2 diabetes. Further, the diet has been effective in controlling seizures in persons who are diagnosed with epilepsy, especially children.

But, the keto diet is not without its dangers. Prolonged compliance will result in a deficiency of fiber, vitamins, as well as minerals since fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products, are prohibited. Others also suffer from side effects such as the flu in the first days of the diet, weakness, headaches, and nausea that are associated with the use of ketogenic diets.

Also, there is no consensus about how a high-fat diet affects the health of the body in the long run. Other research suggests that there is enhanced cholesterol levels that lead to heart diseases. Hard as it may be for many people, it is also almost impossible to adhere to such a strict diet plan, which means the person is likely to gain back the lost weight once they go back to their normal eating plan.

Therefore, although it will be beneficial for some people, for instance, for weight loss and certain diseases, one needs to look at the following disadvantages and talk to a doctor before switching to the ketogenic diet.
