Eternal Dreams

The Garden Beyond the Veil of Sleep

By Alpha CortexPublished about a year ago 5 min read

For as long as she could remember, Leila had been plagued by the same dream. Every night, she found herself standing before a colossal wrought-iron gate, its intricate patterns shimmering faintly in the moonlight. Beyond it lay a garden unlike any she had seen in waking life, brimming with iridescent flowers and trees that seemed to hum with a quiet melody. Yet, no matter how hard she tried, she could never open the gate. Each time her hand touched the cold iron, she would awaken with a start.

Leila’s life was otherwise ordinary. She worked as a librarian in the sleepy town of Willowridge, where the days passed in a haze of sorting books and cataloging dusty volumes. But the dream consumed her thoughts. What was beyond the gate? Why did the dream feel so real, as though it were more than a mere figment of her imagination?

One evening, as the last rays of the setting sun filtered through the library windows, an elderly man approached her desk. He was dressed in a tattered coat, his eyes sharp and unsettlingly knowing.

“You dream of the gate, don’t you?” he asked.

Leila froze. The words seemed to echo in her mind. “How do you know that?” she whispered.

The man smiled faintly. “Because I, too, once stood before it. And I know how to open it.”

The Key to the Gate

Leila’s heart raced as the man reached into his coat and produced a small, ornate key. It gleamed with an otherworldly light, its surface etched with swirling patterns that seemed to shift and change as she looked at it.

“Take this,” he said, placing the key in her trembling hand. “But be warned: the garden is not as it seems. Once you enter, you may never wish to leave.”

Before she could ask him more, the man turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving Leila alone with the key. That night, as she drifted into sleep, she clutched it tightly, its cold surface a strange comfort.

When she opened her eyes, she was once again before the gate. But this time, the key was in her hand. With a deep breath, she slid it into the lock. The gate groaned as it swung open, revealing the garden in all its ethereal splendor.

The Garden Beyond Dreams

Leila stepped through the gate, and the world around her seemed to exhale. The air was thick with the scent of blooming flowers, and the sky shimmered with colors she couldn’t name. The ground beneath her feet was soft, almost cloud-like, and each step sent ripples of light coursing through the earth.

She wandered through the garden in awe. The trees towered above her, their leaves glowing faintly as though infused with starlight. Streams of crystal-clear water wound through the landscape, their surfaces reflecting not her face, but fragments of her memories. She saw herself as a child, running through fields of wildflowers. She saw her mother, laughing as they baked cookies in their tiny kitchen. She saw moments she had forgotten, each one tugging at her heart.

As she moved deeper into the garden, she realized she wasn’t alone. Other figures roamed the paths, their faces serene and their movements dreamlike. They didn’t seem to notice her, lost in their own worlds. She felt a strange kinship with them, as though they were all part of some grand, shared dream.

The Keeper of the Garden

At the heart of the garden stood a pavilion, its arches adorned with vines of silver and gold. Sitting beneath it was a figure cloaked in flowing robes, their face obscured by a veil. Leila approached cautiously, the key still clutched in her hand.

“You have opened the gate,” the figure said, their voice melodic and otherworldly. “Few have the courage to do so.”

“What is this place?” Leila asked. “Why do I keep dreaming of it?”

The figure gestured to the garden around them. “This is the Garden of Eternal Dreams. It exists beyond the veil of sleep, a sanctuary for those who seek solace from the waking world. But it is also a place of choice. Many who enter choose to stay, abandoning their mortal lives to dwell here forever.”

Leila’s breath caught. “Stay here? But why would anyone…” Her voice trailed off as she looked around. The garden was perfection, a place where pain and sorrow seemed to have no hold. It was tempting—so tempting.

The figure seemed to sense her thoughts. “To stay is to give up the life you know. To leave is to carry the memory of this place forever, a bittersweet reminder of what could have been.”

A Tempting Offer

Leila sat beneath the pavilion, her mind racing. She thought of her quiet life in Willowridge, of the empty apartment and the routine that had begun to feel like a cage. Here, in the garden, she felt free for the first time. But she also thought of the world she would leave behind—the books she hadn’t yet read, the places she hadn’t yet seen, the people she might one day meet.

“What happens if I choose to stay?” she asked.

“You will become part of the garden,” the figure said. “Your soul will merge with its essence, and you will know peace beyond imagining. But you will also forget the life you lived.”

Leila’s grip tightened on the key. She looked at the figures wandering the paths, their faces tranquil but empty. Was this truly peace, or was it an escape?

The Decision

After what felt like hours, Leila rose to her feet. “I… I can’t stay. As beautiful as this place is, it isn’t real. My life may not be perfect, but it’s mine. I can’t abandon it.”

The figure nodded, their veil shimmering in the light. “You have chosen wisely, Leila. The garden will always be here, should you ever need it. But remember: the key works only for those who believe in its power. Guard it well.”

As the words faded, so did the garden. Leila felt herself being pulled back, the vibrant colors dissolving into darkness.

Awakening

When she opened her eyes, she was in her bed, the morning light streaming through the window. For a moment, she thought it had all been a dream. But then she felt the weight of the key in her hand, its surface warm and familiar.

Leila sat up, a sense of clarity washing over her. The garden had shown her something she had forgotten: the beauty of her own life, imperfections and all. She placed the key on her bedside table, a reminder that while dreams might offer an escape, it is the waking world where true growth and meaning are found.

As she got ready for the day, a small smile played on her lips. The gate was closed, but the memory of the garden lingered, a quiet promise that she carried within her heart.
