Dragon of the Second Son

Chapter 1: The Storm Gathers

By Rebecca FryPublished 4 years ago Updated 4 years ago 8 min read

There weren’t always dragons in the valley. The valley that was once so sweet and rich with life was beginning to show signs of decay. The trees and flowers stopped growing, the brook dried up two years ago. They were not at all vibrant in color like they used to be, there used to be so many shades of green. This was not just in the valley. A gentle roll of thunder was heard by a small boy who turned his head perplexed because he had never heard sounds like that from the sky at all. He knows birds and wind through the trees but not this…

“God?” he said.

He turned his head toward where the sound came from and focused his eyes on the clouds. The strange clouds were forming in the distance like an erupting volcano, but there was no volcano. There was no nuclear explosion, just silent clouds forming and a gentle breeze coming from the other direction. He continued to gaze at the beautiful event. “What in the world?” Sam thought.

In his spirit, young Samuel was restless. Something was happening that was not normal, not at all something he could have imagined witnessing in a lifetime. Suddenly! the sound…again and louder cracked through the sky. As the sound barrier shattered Sam fell to the ground paralyzed in fear. The clouds were closer now as the sun darkened in the sky. The light from the sun was gone, but the time of day was day. It felt like night, but it was darker than night, except for the flashes of lightning.

Do not be afraid” he listened again to the inaudible voice in his head.

And then he was not afraid, but peaceful. There seemed to be an invisible force around him. He held up his left hand and looked at it closely. Even though it was nearly pitch-black dark around him, he could clearly see his own hand with all its detail. The light around him continued to dim, but he could see the rest of his body and it was not dark, it was not glowing but not invisible. This was not scary but strange. Sam knew that if he stepped into a room, he would not actually light it up, but people could see him clearly. “How is this possible?” Sam thought.

The wind started blowing harder and swirling about, the temperature was not hot or cold, just the same as what was coming in and out of his own nose and mouth. The temperature of the wind was not noticeable, just a lot of it…too much of it blowing too hard. Blowing his hair, and very loud in his ears. It was actually a nice feeling as he rose to his feet and spread his arms toward the direction it was coming. It was fun to lean into it and see if it was strong enough to knock him down. Nope. The feeling was love and he was not afraid at all. He felt loved by whatever this presence was here in this place. He was not afraid as the atmosphere began to build up energetic charges with the flashes of light growing more intense and frequent. The sounds were rolling all around him now. The trees were bending and swaying in different directions. "This is AWESOME!" Sam shouted as goosebumps flooded his little 12 year old body. He could clearly see the wind carrying the leaves and branches that simply couldn’t hold on any longer. It was a feeling of weightlessness. This wind is strong enough for me to fly! This is so cool.

Then the rain. The rain came and drenched his body and then he felt his little human body “too cold!” he said in a childlike voice. The alarming storm was upon him as he quickly looked around to find the direction of his cabin. He was outside but not too far to run back. The dry brook where was playing in began to fill with rushing water. It was now splashing and making a satisfying image of violent flowing water on fresh dry ground. but the sky was open and water was pouring out distracting him from this enjoyment. The noise of the storm, and the thunder was so exciting and fun. I should go NOW. He thought

He was running back to the cabin when for some reason, he suddenly stopped. He turned his head back to the flowing river while the rain was still pouring. There was nothing… Nothing there. “Stay.” said a voice in his head. Then he saw it. Something was dimly glowing in the rushing water it was a stone. It was beautiful. The water was getting deep and flowing fast, but he moved effortlessly closer and reached down to pick it up. Rainwater was pouring over him as if he was in a shower, but he was perfectly warm. He was studying the rock. A normal person would have been knocked down and carried downstream, but he was being held steady by forces in which he was unaware. He was not paying attention to the storm, the river, the rain or the wind, just the stone.

Hmm…He was completely enchanted by this glowing rock. It was like a racquet ball size sphere and perfectly round. No? Now it is like a grapefruit, and growing. Everything is fine He picked it up, this is neat. It was warm he did not want to put it down it was like holding a purring kitten. He shook it, it changed colors barely, he held it to his ear, heard nothing. There was energy like a baby is inside it. There was no baby inside it? but he stuck it under his coat and took it on his way. This was only a glowing rock, how could he already be in love with it? It was beyond understanding.

The whole time he was on the way to the cabin the storm was fierce around him. It was violent outside with lightning sparks everywhere, cracking sounds of trees falling, and even the ground was trembling. But while holding the sphere all he could feel was peace, no harm or fear was even close to him. His atmosphere seemed like angry chaos falling apart around him, but he only had feelings of love for that growing ball he was holding under his jacket. Yet it kept growing! By the time he made it to the cabin it was the size of a basketball and still perfectly round.

The cabin was dark and cold at first. EEW. He thought. He entered with the ‘stone’ and laid it on his bed, it seemed appropriate. What started out dark and cold was instantly comfortable like body temperature should be and even though the cabin started out cold, but Sam barely noticed it. He stopped a second to think, Was it the stone? He was very drowsy, he curled up with the sphere in his tummy and laid down for a nap, but before his nap, he jumped up and drank a glass of water. Time went by. He didn’t know how long he was asleep, he fell asleep after going back to hold the stone in a fetal position, as it was still dark outside, then light, then dark again. Was it dark when I went to bed?

When he woke the stone was gone. He heard a rustling sound in the kitchen. He went in and there was the creature eating his breakfast cereal. The creature had already eaten the leftover pizza. He looked up and directly at him startled, and then suddenly ran quickly toward him. AHH! Scared. Sam went running back into the room. It was making a loud noise, it was like a laughing noise, it was a crazy sound but the emotion from it was easy to feel. It was laughter and joy and there was no threatening emotions coming from the creature. It was only love. There was no threat, but it was amazing. The storm was finished and when he looked outside the sky was pink, and the light outside was pink. The creature was more interesting than the atmosphere outside though. The creature reminded him of a curious racoon raiding the kitchen and spilling out the sugar and the flour, smelling and tasting everything.

He approached carefully the creature was aware that it was their first acquaintance. It was so amazing to see the creature gaining mass directly before his eyes. Sam knew that he was not in a crazy time vortex, time was passing normally, but he could visibly see the creature growing. The creature blinked twice and sat down. Sam spoke to it.

“Hey buddy, you’re gonna be okay. Are you tired fella?”

The creature looked at him and on that big face, there was not a smile, but he felt the smile coming from the creature. It was like a smiling dog, even though you can’t actually “see” the smile. Sam immediately smiled back with a HUGE grin. DAMN. He thought.

It was the first time he was spoken to by a human being and it felt like a dream to meet this boy. It was not a dream. This is real and exciting, it made that screechy noise again. The dragon already had the telepathy ability to send messages to the boy and so he introduced himself immediately and spoke quickly and hastily into his mind.

Hey Sam! Yeah…I’m here to be with you. I know this is a lot for you to take in right now. So you can see that I’m a dragon. Duh!… haha Trippy huh? hahaha" The voice inside Sam’s head was a juvenile voice laughing because it was a ridiculous situation. The dragon was not yet developed into a “man” dragon voice so he was attempting to explain. Puberty voice cracking because of the accelerated changes. The voice would have been at the same age Sam is now. 12 years. He spoke more seriously…

You will give me a name that will stick with me for our lifetime. I have a lot to show you but it will all be revealed to you in perfect time. I know you are only 12, I need your help the next couple of days while I finish developing this body that is going to last me for the next several thousand years. I already know the beginning and the end. I am at the point right now where we meet. The time is NOW, actually. We don’t have a lot of time to bullshit. I love you. We will get to know each other so fast, so soon. I know we are already best friends. I was tasting this pizza, this cereal, I don’t need the nutrition it is just so interesting…..” Then the dragon passed out and fell to the floor.

This information zapped into Sam’s brain in an instant and Sam responded to the dragon vocally.

“Ok then, welcome to Apotheus. I’m so glad you’re here just let me know how I can help you, and we will spend plenty time together. You are such a brave and good dragon.” Sam continued to speak even though the dragon was clearly unconscious. He just keep gazing at the sleeping dragon lovingly and went to his bed and got him a pillow. He slipped the pillow under his head as he slept and curled up beside him on the floor. There was so much love in that room. By this time the dragon was the size of a large horse.
