Disneyland trip adventure

What Are the Benefits and Challenges of Living in a Multicultural Society?

By Chisi limiPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

My oldest son had been asking to go to Disneyland for years. He’d studied the map, watched videos of all the rides, and dreamed of going on Space Mountain. Finally, when he turned 10, we decided to make it happen. We planned the trip for months and the excitement was palpable.

We arrived at the airport at the crack of dawn, bleary-eyed but eager to get started. We had a direct flight to LA, and my son was bouncing in his seat as we took off.

But just as we reached cruising altitude, the captain’s voice came over the intercom. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m afraid we have some bad news. There’s a mechanical issue with the plane and we’re going to have to make an emergency landing.”

Panic set in as we descended quickly, the ground coming up fast. But just before we touched down, the pilot pulled up sharply, the nose of the plane pointed straight up. I screamed, my heart pounding in my chest, but my son just laughed.

“This is just like a ride!” he shouted over the roar of the engines.

We circled for what felt like hours, waiting for a clear runway to land on. When we finally did touch down, we were in a completely different city. Our connecting flight had left without us, and the next available flight wasn’t until the next day.

I braced myself for a meltdown from my son, but he surprised me again. “It’s okay,” he said, putting a reassuring hand on my arm. “We’ll just have an adventure.”

And that’s exactly what we did. We rented a car and drove to a nearby beach town, where we spent the day playing in the surf and eating ice cream. We watched the sunset from a pier and laughed as we got soaked by a rogue wave.

The next day, we caught our flight to LA and arrived at Disneyland in the late afternoon. It was crowded and hot, but my son was in heaven. We rode every ride, ate every treat, and took pictures with all the characters. As we walked through the park, exhausted but happy, my son turned to me with a grin.

“This was the best adventure ever,” he said.

And I knew he was right. It wasn’t the trip we had planned, but it was the trip we needed. We had faced unexpected challenges, but we had also found unexpected joy. And in the end, that was all that mattered.

After the arcade, we wandered around the park, taking in the sights and sounds. My son was more interested in the games and prizes than the marine life, but I didn't mind. Seeing him so excited and happy was enough for me.

As we walked, we spotted a group of dolphins swimming in a large tank. My son and his friend ran over to get a closer look, and I followed closely behind. We watched as the dolphins swam gracefully through the water, performing tricks and splashing playfully.

Suddenly, one of the dolphins swam up to the edge of the tank and looked directly at my son. It was as if they were sharing a moment, connecting in some way that only they could understand. My son's eyes widened in amazement and wonder.

We stayed at the dolphin tank for a while longer, marveling at the beauty and intelligence of these incredible animals. And then, just as suddenly as it had started, the dolphin swam away, disappearing into the depths of the tank.

As we continued on our journey through Sea World, my son seemed lost in thought, pondering the experience he had just had with the dolphin. I could tell that something had shifted in him, something that he couldn't quite put into words.

Later that evening, as we sat in our hotel room, my son turned to me and said, "Mom, I know we didn't get to go to Sesame Place like we planned, but today was still one of the best days of my life."

I smiled, feeling a surge of love and gratitude for this amazing child who always saw the bright side of things, even when they didn't go according to plan. And I knew that, no matter where life took us, we would always have these moments of wonder and joy to carry us through.
