A woman earns her spot in history.
She stood straight and tall as the medal adorned her neck. She was not just the first female to receive the Medal of Honor, but the first black woman from Delaware to be awarded the nation’s highest award for a fighter.
Her captain insignia gleamed as the president of the United States placed the lanyard around her neck.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Captain Orwuasia Peebles.”
The room all clapped. She flashed a smile and lifted her chin a bit. Four star Army General Constance Deo saluted Orwuasia and she returned it.
“Remember her intrepidity,” the president said. More applause soon followed that.
