Creation and Elation
January 13: Day 13 of A-Story-a-Day for 2024

"Invention, it must be humbly admitted, does not consist of creating out of the void but out of chaos."
— Mary Shelley, Frankenstein
I am the envy of any mad scientist. I aim to build a living creature, and I will succeed. I will animate what before was empty space and only an empty potential, awaiting serendipity or the mad designs of a lunatic.
I've studied the texts, which was unnecessary, because making a creature is easy. For me.
Just the other day I built an eye for my creature. By the weekend I had a pair. I wonder what my living creature will see. Last week I had laid out his spine, coaxing the nerves into the right positions for synaptic conduction. I wonder if he feels yet. Last month I initiated the spark that made the blood pump.
It's miraculous really, what I am scheming.
I just know my creature will have a good brain, not an evil one. After all, I chose his ingredients so carefully. Plan ahead if you want to make a kind, giving creature. Use the right parts. Nothing abby-normal.
Now I'm busy with the other organs — the kidneys, the adrenals, the entire gastrointestinal tract, which you have to connect up just so. The liver was a real bitch, but now it sits there right under the right rib cage.
I wonder about a conscience, though. Will that just come naturally? Do I have to coax it along once animation and self-awareness is in the can? (That's where choosing a good brain comes in.)
I'm all alone in my endeavor now. I have no assistance, no protégés to assist me. And it's best like that. I must work in secrecy, lest others discover what I'm doing and force me to destroy my important work. There are those who would approach with lighted torches and think as one villainous mob of naysayers.
But science must march on, no matter what the cost. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!
I sing,
"To the front, for success, onward we'll ever stride!"
Now I can feel my creature's quickening. I hope to finished building him by my due date.
