Crazy Owls

I came upon a house I had just inherited from an old family member that I didn't even know. I looked around and saw a very old barn that looks like it hasn't been touched in years. I hesitated on walking towards the old bard but I kept hearing a strange noise coming from it I couldn't figure out what it was. I looked around and at first I didn't see anything but I had to find out what was making the noise.

I had to climbed up what seemed to be an old wooden set of steps to the loft where hay would have been stored to find that there were feathers and hay all over the hard wood floor. I hadn't looked up yet. I still could hear the noise it seemed to be getting louder and louder with every step I took. Finally I looked up and saw multiple owls and their nests in the beams of the old barn. After a while the owls started to fly around as if to protect their young from harm. I started to scream for help and forgot I was all alone on a farm where no one could hear me. I finally climbed back down to the main area of the barn and found one of the babies near a old tractor cheaping and squacking for it mom but none of the owls showed up. I placed some hay and a small container of feed and water near by. I placed a trail camera near the baby just in some of the other owls decided to harm the baby. The next morning I went to see if the baby was still there by my surprise the baby was not there but where did it go? I loaded up the trail camera onto my computer and watched ever little clip possible and by the 4th clip I saw an amazing thing. The other owls started playing with the baby and making him feel like family, even though he was a spotted snow owl and not a barn owl. I kept watching and saw that the baby owl started to flap his wings and flew up to the rafters where the other owls were. I ended up give the one the name Zoarah. I never thought I would have birds as pets.

The next morning I went to the animal feed store and asked questions on what type of food do owls eat and if there was a type of food that babies like. The store clerk responded “Yes, we have different types of food for owls but mostly they hunt for mice and other small live critters.” “Oh, I didn’t know that well at least my new home won’t have many mice.” I responded. Now I have the feed and I can place an old bowl in the barn for water, and keep an eye out for any changes in the other owls behavior. I returned to the property and walk to the barn where I climbed up to where the owls were nesting and place a pile of food and a bowl of water on one side of the barn. Without me even knowing it Zoarah was right next too my feet with a few friends. I didn’t not move for I didn’t want to scare them. So I sat dow slowly to interact with them. To my surprise more owls came to join the us. It was like I became one of them. I never expected to gain such beautiful birds. After a while I go up a left I still had to go into the house in which I hadn’t been inside in many years. I walked up to the big blue door and was confused it looked like it was new. I could only think of a million reasons why the door would be new. But I brushed it off and continue with entering in and I found a beautiful clean house on the inside never thought the house was well looked after. Next think I knew there was a vehicle coming up the drive and I wondered who it could have been. I didn’t know many people and I thought I was the only one that came here. I stepped out onto the porch to greet the person. “Welcome to my home may I ask who you are sir and what brings you to my property?” I had asked the gentleman responded “My name is Xavier Donalds and I have been maintaining this house for years and the kind old lady that lived here before you said she would love for me to maintain the house and the rest of the land for as long as the new owner would allow. I’m assuming that you are that new owner of this land?” He said with a sly smirk. I looked at him with a smile and responded Yes I am the new owner the old lady in which you speak of was my great grandmother. She left me this place along with some other things. So let me get everything straight you are the one that fixed the door cleaned the house and kept the rest of the property tidy?” He had a look on his face as if I had said something funny. He said “Yes and I am here to fix the tractor so the fields can be plowed and planted with vegetables and other sources of home grown produce. By the way there is an apple field here on the property that produces the best apples in town no one else knows where they are but I do.” I was curious to know more about the apples but first I should warn him about the owls. Just as I was about to say something he was off to the barn and I had to go catch up to him. As soon as we got to the barn I opened my mouth to say “Xavier can you..” And with that the owls start attacking Xavier as if to protect me and the babies. They never touched me but I said “Let’s step outside were it’s safer.” Xavier didn’t know what to say but the words were “What was that all about a month ago owls weren’t coming to this town everyone had mice and had to get cats some people were allergic to them and had to resort to traps. Those owls aren’t even supposed to exist. How are they eve still here? Oh my so many questions but first why did the attack me and no you?” I calmly told home how I interact with them and that I had named one.
