Control is an Illusion
A character study from my novel, CASTLING
The princess had all she ever wanted right within her grasp.
Power, control - a crown.
It pulsated a supernatural force against her skin, like the crashing of a wave against a rocky shore, or the anxious thrumming of an unsteady heartbeat. It was a thing of metal and blood to be placed over her eyes, as was custom, to ensure her divine right to rule was preserved forevermore.
But her rule was to be put to the test, for as soon as that cold metal enclosed around her, another presence would seek to overcome her control.
A presence she knew well; a being of fire, chaos, and sin.
She thought if she had sacrificed her flesh for armor, she would be invincible.
She thought if she had filed her finger tips down to blades, she could cut through any opposition.
She thought if she had swapped her legs for those of a battle-tested steed, she could outrun the inevitable realization that this crown - this control - was an illusion.
And this illusion was about to bring her, and her kingdom, to ruin.

I met Jason when I was five years old. I could say that I loved him from the moment I saw him. He was so handsome to me and I felt in awe by his presence. When they introduced him as the new kid in school, I wanted to be his friend right away. I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember his smile and how he didn't seem shy. He appeared confident and ready to learn. I waved at him and said "hello," before anyone else could even say a word. He sat next to me, and I asked him if he wanted to be friends. He looked so happy as he said, "Yes!"
