ConspirOcracy

Is the Art of Truth-Telling Falling Prey to Tall-Tale Conspiracies?

By Rick BeneteauPublished 2 years ago Updated 2 years ago 1 min read

I must ask: Does the truth count for anything anymore?

It's becoming increasingly harder to discern what is truth from what is cleverly manufactured misinformation these days. The world is definitely drowning in a sea of ConspirOcracy!

In order to understand what is not a new phenomenon, I did some digging and came to the following conclusions as to the criteria for a successful conspiracy theory:

1. It must confirm what the person wants to believe. In other words, confirmation bias.

2. To become viral, it needs to be ultra-exciting, offering the person an earth-shattering solution to an existing problem. Often, the problem itself is a total fabrication!

3. It needs to fill a deep psychological need, perhaps to substantiate the beliefs of a group the person belongs to, or even for the person to just feel safe with a sense of control in this chaotic world - the kind of chaos created by ConspirOcracy!

The next time - and it won’t take long - you are confronted with a juicy, bigger-than-life explosive revelation that has you frothing at the mouth to spew out into the world, do this:

Take a deep breath.

Several in fact.

Then let your thumbs do the walking and start doing your own due diligence to connect the dots. You will most always be surprised, and hopefully relieved, by what you will discover – The Truth.

A closing question: are Elvis, John F. Kennedy and Bigfoot really cryogenically frozen in an underground bunker in Area 51?
