Lost in darkness

The last star, Armos, flickered in the autumn sky, slowly dimming until it disappeared, leaving nothing but the ever silent night. The beasts within the forest took no notice, but those who understood were frightened by the implications. Armos was the last companion to survive the purge of light that had extinguished the others in the sky. Tay and Armos were the stars, and Muther was the world that lay at the center of it all. Scholars of the day claimed that this plague was divine punishment, and the following plagues were proof of divine hatred toward unbelievers. With Armos's death, they would now hold sway over the world, and those who believed in free thought would face a bleak future.

The forest burned under the black, empty sky, and the air became thick with the smell of heretics turned to ash. On one side of the world, known as Muther, they burned the thinkers, but on the other side, they welcomed them. In the land of Kush, refugees of thought built new cities of learning and began to peer at the ever-night skies to answer the question of why. For a time, darkness was absolute, and the ash of those who perished fueled the zealot's fervor, but that too passed with time. The knowledge of Kush came at a price, and that price was knowing. As they studied their own star, Tay, they noticed it too dimming. They knew a time of famine was coming and became cautious with their stock of animals and plants, speaking of Muther not as the center but as an island within the whirlpool of Tay.

As centuries passed and the need for wisdom grew, a single star twinkled out of the northern sky, only to go silent again a few years later. The old books named it “Arle the Thinker,” and for a time, a new religion known as Reason ruled. The first prediction that came to pass was that Arle would return in time, and it did, before the darkness claimed it once more. Arle also said that Tay was a ship lost in a storm at sea, but she too was captured by “those who knew” and burned in a bonfire, with only a few pages of her knowledge hinting at the truth. Her death started the age of dark, but knowledge refused to pass quietly within the still sky. Words grew from the ash, and though the night sky remained still, truth flourished and refused to stay quiet.

With the words, “We are not the center,” the people changed, and the fear of the dark started to slip away. They built wonders under a single light that shone brighter as they grew ready to be more than the fear cultivated under the empty, dreamless skies. Their fiction spoke of star-filled universes and heroes who broke the veil. Their science discovered other worlds huddled around the light of Tay, and they knew they were not alone. As time passed, they reached toward these worlds and found nothing but desolation and giants too inhospitable to sustain life. Instead of fear, wonder grew, and ships and probes were made to search, with each but one returning to tell its tale. The still night hinted at unknown knowledge, and the world spoke of a romantic need to answer the question of where the light had gone.

Their world grew to a single voice, and as their needs for food, water, and protection were met, one question remained: where was the light? During the age of unification, they decided to find out. This project dwarfed all others in their history, and they spoke as one to find the light and save their unseen brothers on other worlds plagued by this darkness. They chose a man of singular reason to lead, sending him and a crew of twenty on the Illuminor forward to lead their world out of ignorance. As time passed and debates of morality took precedence, they forgot about their travelers, and time passed as they became silent due to the unknown shadows.

The lost were mourned on Muther, but many believed they would return with an answer to why they knew only darkness. The distances were unfathomable for the crew, and their faith was put to a test that many couldn't pass, yet they prevailed. They passed out of the veil to see the truth, and for many ages, tears flowed not out of fear but of wonder. Their captain stood silent for a time, then broke the spell with orders to send the images to their home, but nothing could pierce the veil of ink that lay upon their world and age. He looked to his first officer, and she spoke of an idea that caused a stir on the lonely craft.

The crew of the Illuminor had ventured deeper into the cosmos, encountering remnants of ancient civilizations and piecing together the story of a cosmic cataclysm. Their travels led them to a terrifying revelation: a nearby magnetar they named Shadows, a highly magnetized neutron star, was the source of the darkness. The magnetar had experienced a violent outburst, ejecting a vast tail of heavy metals and soot into space, creating a dense shroud that blocked starlight. The star looked like a black comet thats tail hid hundred of thousands of star system and Muther was among them.

Elya, the first officer, proposed an audacious plan: they would use the ship's engines to create a series of pulses, pushing the soot away and opening a temporary window for light to reach Muther. The plan was risky, as the ship would be exposed to the magnetar's deadly radiation, and the engines would likely be damaged beyond repair.

Captain Jorun, understanding the significance of their mission, agreed. The crew prepared for what could be their final act, knowing the sacrifice might be necessary to save their world. They calculated the precise engine pulses needed to create a path through the soot and initiated the sequence.

As the Illuminor approached the magnetar, the crew could feel the intense magnetic fields tugging at their ship. The engines roared to life, each pulse pushing the heavy particles aside. The strain on the ship was immense, and warning alarms blared as systems began to fail.

With each pulse, a small window of light opened, sending beams of hope back toward Muther. The crew watched in awe as the darkness slowly gave way, revealing the stars once more. However, the ship's integrity was compromised, and it became clear they would not survive the endeavor.

In their final moments, Captain Jorun sent a message back to Muther, detailing their discovery and the sacrifice they were making. "We give our lives for the light."

The Illuminor's last engine pulse was its most powerful, creating a brilliant flash that pierced the veil of soot rocking the star Shadows as it ended the ejection event. The ship disintegrated in the process, a supernova of sacrifice that left a clear path for light to shine through.

Two years later on Muther, the night sky began to brighten as the beams of starlight reached them. The people watched in wonder as the darkness receded, and the stars reappeared, a testament to the bravery of the Illuminor's crew as the words on repeat "We give our lives for the light.".

The story of their sacrifice spread across the world then worlds, inspiring a new generation of thinkers and explorers. They rebuilt their world with a renewed sense of purpose, determined to honor the legacy of those who had given everything to bring back the light.
