Chosen, Not Cursed

What happens when a poor Jamaican boy, broken by hardship, finds hope in the most unlikely place—a donkey that speaks? This is the story of Lonzo, a boy who thought his life was cursed until he discovered that even in the darkest struggles, magic and purpose can be found.

The Boy and the Magical Donkey

Two hundred years ago in the hills of Jamaica, there lived a boy named Lonzo. He was known in his small community as “the dark boy with the grey donkey.” His donkey, JimBridge, was wild—untamed by everyone except Lonzo.

Lonzo wore the same faded blue coat day after day. No one in the village spoke to him. His family lived crammed into a single bedroom. His parents worked endlessly on the farm, and the only food they ate came from the land—vegetables, fruits, roots. Meat was a luxury they never knew. They had no electricity, no toilet, and barely any schooling.

Lonzo was tired of the struggle. He was tired of watching his mother break under the weight of worry and his father wear down under endless labor. One morning, determined to escape, Lonzo rode JimBridge into the woods.

There, under the canopy of trees, the boy broke. Tears streamed down his face.

“Why are we so poor? Why is everyone else richer than us? Are we cursed? Why can’t we live like them?”

His chest heaved as he shouted to the heavens,

“If there is a God, where is He? Why isn’t He helping us?”

Lonzo stumbled toward the edge of a cliff. His body trembled, his heart heavy. “Maybe it’s better to end it now,” he whispered.

Then he heard it.

A voice.“Master, wait.”

Lonzo spun around. The donkey—JimBridge—was speaking.

He fell back in shock. “Am I dreaming? A talking donkey?”

JimBridge stepped forward, steady and calm, catching Lonzo before he slipped from the cliff’s edge. “I am not just a donkey,” he said. “I am your friend. I can help you.”

Lonzo shook his head, sobbing. “Nothing good ever happens to me.”

The donkey leaned close and wiped Lonzo’s tears with his hoof. “Listen to me. You are not cursed. You are chosen.”

Lonzo’s breath caught. “Chosen? For what? We have nothing.”

JimBridge’s eyes glowed softly. “You were given struggles so you could grow strong. Strength isn’t just surviving—it’s daring to dream. Your pain will become your power. Your voice will rise above silence. And one day, you will lift your family, your people, higher than they ever thought possible.”

Lonzo stood tall for the first time in his life. He looked back at his small, broken village and felt something new inside him—not despair, but determination.

He hugged the donkey tightly. “Thank you, my friend. You’ve given me hope when I had none.”

The donkey smiled. “Hope is the first step. Now walk forward with courage.”

Together, the boy and the magical donkey stepped out of the forest. The clouds parted, and sunlight poured across the land. Lonzo lifted his face to the warmth and whispered,

“This is not the end. This is my beginning.”

Lonzo’s journey reminds us that even in the hardest moments, hope has a way of finding us—sometimes in the most unexpected forms. Struggle does not mean the end; it can be the beginning of strength, vision, and purpose.
