The archway bore ancient runes, which I could not decipher. Beneath it were two dark stairways; the left going up, the right going down.
"Which way?" asked the dwarf. Even by torchlight, I saw how his eyes thirsted after the glittering stone that sat atop the staff the wizard had given me.
"The runes say the right will take us safely through," I said, gesturing for him to lead.
As he turned from me, I pushed him with all my strength, then listened as he tumbled down the long flight of stairs.
Satisfied, I turned left and began to climb.
