“Nobody listens to me. I should just commit suicide. God has not given me the word to actually do it, so I’ll suffer and sacrifice. I don’t like this world. I don’t like life,” Scottie Fend said aloud. He didn’t say it with rancor but with absolute resignation.

“So get off the pot,” Jeb Clothman replied.

Fend picked up his head. “What?”

“I’m not going to suggest that you actually take your own life, so I’ll just say if you’re not going to go through with it, live a complete, fully charged life. You’re only saying it because you’re Christian, part of a morality of death. How many Objectivists pine for a pine box?”

“That’s for you people. Jesus is going to save me.”

“And that’s the attitude of someone who is living a third or quarter of a life. That now clichéd phrase ‘he lived his life to the fullest’ should have been rationed out instead of used for nearly every obituary across the world.”

“Whatever. I don’t care. No one listens to me. I’m glad that my uncle is stilll here. He’s one hundred and two and still in his right mind. I’m thirty-three years younger than him. I still glean wisdom from him. No one listens to me.”

“I’m listening to you right now. I want you to experience how wonderful life is. I’ll let you know…your climate and your weather…your climate should always be CAVU.”

“CAVU?”

“Ceiling and visibility unlimited.”

“And my weather?”

“You’re currently experiencing hurricanes, but as long as your climate remains consistent, those weather patterns will clear.”

“I’ve just lost so many people in my life. I’m run down. I’m just tired.”

“That should give you impetus to live a fully charged life.”

“I want to get to that point, if it’s possible.”

Creative story and emotional. It's deep. I believe God is a loving God and suicide is caused from major depression. I do not go to church.

  • Interesting story and topic. (Christianity doesn't support suicide though, thinking Christ will save, it's actually the opposite. Sorry, to clarify, that just struck me so I had to say.) As always, I enjoy your writing.
