Broken S:1 E:1 Left Behind

4 weeks before Christmas...

Makayla get home at 10:57pm from Christmas shopping with Liv. She shuts the car door and waves as Liv and her mom drive off. She picks up the ton of shopping bags she has. She walks up the porch and unlocks the door and struggles to get her house keys.

She opens the door to a dimly lit home and yells out...

Makayla: Mom!! Dad!! I'm home!!

As she was locking the door when she heard footsteps behind her.

Makayla: sorry I'm late we got a little sidetracked

Makayla: I just wanted to make sure I got Penelope at least one gift to open-

When she turns around she sees her dad at the end of the hallway teary eyed. It had looked like he'd been crying for a while.

Makayla: Dad what's wrong?..where's mom?

He tried to answer but he started crying again and Makayla walked over.

Makayla: Dad what happened!

He sobbed and collapsed on the floor and Makayla kneeled in front of him.

Makayla: Please talk to me.. Dad, what happened?

Makayla looks around for help to deal with her dad. She stands up and calls out for her mom.

He looks up and finally says..

Michael: She's gone..

Makayla: What?

She was starting to think the worst.

Michael: She left us Makayla.. She took P and left!

Makayla is confused and looks around when realization hits her and she finally realizes the silence that floods the house was abnormal and the house was empty. She was left behind.

She puts her back against the wall and Slowly slid down and just sat there thinking. The view pans out to show the two of them on the floor.

*screen goes black*

Title screen: BROKEN

Liv climbs up into the treehouse and sees everyone else there.

Tyler: You get summoned too?

He says as he helps her up.

Liv: anybody know what for??

Marcus: no clue..

Madi: honestly I was shocked she texted, M hasn't texted me in like 2 weeks.

Liv: same, I kinda just thought she was busy or talking to you guys. Has she been at school because I haven't seen her.

Tyler: Maybe Jordan will know something and can text us a warning. He's waiting for her at the door.

Marcus: and say what exactly.. Guys it's MK I'm like 82% sure it's fine

Liv: You don't worry enough (rolls her eyes)

Marcus: Oh I worry plenty trust me-

He gets cut off by the door opening. Jordan climbs up and makes a face.

Madi: Why do you look like that?? Where is she?

Madi get her question asked when Makayla climbs up right behind him.

Marcus: oh you do NOT look great..

Liv smacks his arm.

Liv: he means are you ok?

Makayla doesn't say anything at first

Marcus: MK I'm sorry-

Makayla: My mom left me.. she left and she took P

They all just look up at her but don't say anything.

Liv: M I'm sorry

Madi: Wait I'm confused

Jordan: yea I didn't know your parents were unhappy

Makayla: that's the thing neither did I!

They looked confused.

Makayla: Literally that morning they were laughing and hugging like usual.

Jordan: what'd your dad say?

Makayla: not much, he's just as confused as I am

Makayla: I've kind of just been spending all my time taking care of him. She broke him. He doesn't eat or bathe unless I make him.. Hell he'll even forget to breathe if I didn't remind him.

Liv: sounds like you've been busy

Makayla: I have been..

Liv started to smile and Makayla playfully looked scared

Liv: come to the mall

Makayla: (uncertain) Uhh I dunno Liv

Liv: Pleasee come on you need it and we haven't seen your beautiful face in like 2 in a half weeks

Makayla: (smiling) when

Liv: Saturday at-

Marcus: Work

Liv: Today.. at 7-

Marcus points up suggest to move the time back. He keeps going until she reaches a time he can do.

Liv: 7:30..45..8..8:30

He gives a thumbs up

Liv: ok 8:30 I'll pick you up

Makayla: I never said yes (laughing)

Liv: we'll invite Wyatt

Jordan looks up

Jordan: I'm pretty sure he's busy with workouts and whatnot

Tyler looks at him with suspicion

Tyler: well saying as through we all workout on the same schedule I think he's free

Madi: yea and an invite won't hurt

Liv: 8:30 I'm at your place

Makayla laughs then climbs out the treehouse laughing

Liv looks at Marcus

Liv: "82% sure" my ass

*The scene cuts*

Makayla gets home and sees her dad on the couch. He's wrapped up in a blanket, beard growing out, hair messy, with a beer in hand.

Makayla: Hey dad

No answer..

She walks over to him and takes the beer out of his hand.

Michael: What the hel-

Makayla: I'm leaving to go to the mall soon can I trust you to clean up and eat while I'm gone..

He doesn't say anything just looks at the beer. She walks over to the sink and pours it out. He jumps up as she goes to the fridge to do the same with the rest.

Michael: MAKAYLA ELIZABETH BOWMAN-

Makayla: DAD!! I AM FIFTEEN YEARS OLD!!

He stops talking.

Makayla: I am 15 years old taking care of my dad in his 40s-

Michael: My wife left me and I needed-

Makayla: what could you possibly need dad that is so much more important than me.

He looked confused.

Makayla: You never ONCE asked me how I felt. SHE WAS MY MOM. I NEEDED MY DAD AND YOU WEREN'T THERE

He went to talk but she didn't let him.

Makayla: You keep saying your world stopped and she was your everything.. DAD I'M STILL HERE, I DIDN'T LEAVE. I NEEDED YOU.. I NEED YOU.

She started to tear up but wipes the tears away quickly.

Makayla: why did she leave..

She said calmly looking in his eyes.

Michael: I don't know!!

Makayla: Bull SHIT! You expect me to believe she just walked away from a perfectly healthly marriage

Michael: YES!!

Makayla: I can't do this with you anymore.. I'm still here.. present.. IN YOUR LIFE, but it's like you can't even see me.

Tears formed a wall in her eyes and before she let that wall down she walked toward the door, left, and slammed it shut.

He stood there looking at the door thinking.

Makayla is outside now sitting on the porch crying when a car pulls up. She doesn't hear it. A car door closes in the distance and Liv walks up and rubs her back.

Liv: hey.. look at me

She looks up.

Liv: what happened

Makayla: It's feels like when my mom left she took everyone and left me behind. My dad's here but that's not him.. he left too.

Liv: come on, I think you need to be out and away from this house for a few hours. You have been here for two weeks straight.

She helps her up and wraps an arm around her and they walk down the driveway to the car.

*The view pans out while they walk and the scene changes*

Liv: Thanks mom, I'll text you when we're ready to leave

Kami: Makayla love come here real quick

Makayla nervously walks over to the window.

Kami: If you ever needed to I hope you know you are always welcome over and that I love you like my own

Makayla: Thank you, I love you guys too

Kami: and you're allowed to stay however long as you need

Makayla just smiled and Kami waved to the girls and drove away.

Makayla walks back over to Liv whos checking her phone.

Liv: Tyler is so damn discreet.. "I'm here" (reading his text in a mocking tone) here where??

Makayla laughs

Liv: He acts like this isn't a huge mall like there isn't 200+ stores in here

Makayla: he's probably in Dick's Sporting Goods

Liv dramatically rolls her eyes.

Liv: the only thing that store has to offer is the hot guys that shop there

Makayla: Amen to that

Liv's phone gets a notification

Liv: HA "At Dick's" I knew it!!

They both laughed and started walking there.

They walk into Dick's Sporting Goods and see Tyler and wyatt in the back throwing around a football

Liv: Party's here!

They put the football down and walk over smiling. Ty gives Makayla a tight hug and whispers "are you ok?" she pulls away from the hug and nods with a gentle smile.

Wyatt walks over to her after greeting Liv.

Wyatt: where ya been? haven't seen you in a while.

Makayla: been sick at home but I feel a little better and Liv insists I get out the house

Wyatt: I'm happy you feel better school's been sadder without you

She laughed

Makayla: don't be cheesy. You know it was the same (laughs)

Wyatt: nah and I got to see you smile and you've looked bummed since you got here.

Makayla: it's uh.. horrible sick.. got my whole family.. you really don't wanna catch that

He playfully rolls his eyes. Jordan walks in. He looks at Wyatt and Makayla and Tyler sees him looking.

Tyler: where's Madi and Marcus??

Jordan: umm Marcus is closing and Madi's dad wanted to take some business pictures something about them being able to help with re-election

Makayla: are we gonna wait for them here or just do something else

Tyler: I know marcus wanted to do an escape room he said he'll pay so i guess we do something till they get here

Liv: He's bringing Madi?

Tyler: yeah on his dad's motorcycle

Makayla: In the meantime we're going to The Sanrio store

Liv: no debating.

*Scene changes*

The girls walk out of the store laughing yet empty handed then the camera pans over to the boys carrying their shopping bags talking in the back.

Madi screams in joy to get their attention. Makayla and Liv run over and hug her.

Madi: y'all went to Sanrio without me (sarcastic sad face)

Liv: girl we got you gifts don't worry

Marcus walks up behind her

Marcus: no hello kitty for me?? (joking)

Makayla: oh trust you got something.

Marcus: oh..

Jordan: yea they felt the need to make sure we all have something

Marcus: Oh I'm so grateful (sarcastic)

Liv: You should be

Makayla: I got you KUROMI!!

She turned to Tyler and reached in the bag and threw a cute Kuromi keychain at him.

Makayla: You're Welcome.

Marcus: what'd they get

Liv: Madi you got Cinnamoroll, Jordan got Pochacco, Ty got Chococat, I got Hello Kitty and M got My Melody

Marcus: so in short I got the best one

He clips Kuromi to his jeans.

Wyatt: this felt like a group thing so I didn't get one

Liv: after we said you were more than welcome to get one.. YOU'D EAT WITH KEROPPI

They laugh

Marcus: enough chatting let's go escape

They get to the escape room. The theme is hunted circus.

Madi: why the hell are we not doing a cute Christmas themed one

Marcus: this one looked cooler, c'mon

The group walks into a dark neon room with circus decor

Madi:... absolutely not I'm calling my chauffeur

Tyler walked behind her and wrapped his arms around her trapping her.

Tyler: stayyy It'll be fun

Marcus: There's no jumpscares I'm 92% sure..

Liv: last time you were that sure of something you were wrong

Marcus: do you want mads here or not..

Liv reached out for Madi's hand.

They started the room and ended up in teams. Marcus, Madi, and Liv. Tyler and Jordan, and Makayla and Wyatt.

Tyler and Jordan are talking trying to find a clue and in the distance you can see Makayla and Wyatt talking and the camera focuses back on Tyler and Jordan.

Jordan: the vending machine opens we just need to find out the order in which to press the drinks

He glances over Tylers shoulder at Makayla and Wyatt and Tyler notices.

Tyler: Ya'know She'll never know you like her if you just keep looking at her

He smiled and Jordan looked at him confused and nervous.

Jordan: What are you talking about M is like a sister to me (laughs nervously)

Tyler: I don't even think you believed that when you said it

Jordan: (sighs) She looks happy with him

Tyler: She looks happy to be out the house

Jordan: exactly she has too much on her plate right now

Tyler: I just keeping hearing excuses. She needs distractions right now-

Jordan: I don't want to be a distraction though

Tyler: You and I both know she more true to herself to only date a guy to use as a distraction. If she really feels like shes not in the right head space she'd say that.

Jordan: you know just because you are a year older doesn't mean you have to be "Tyler the Wise"

They laugh

Tyler: don't be mad I bury my head in books and-

Wyatt yells he found the code to the vending machine and Jordan looks annoyed.

Tyler whispers in Jordans eye before going to join the others.

Tyler: remember he's your friend too

Jordan: yea it's just I'm the one who found out the vending machine opens

Tyler: (laughs) don't be a baby

They walk over to the others that now have the vending machine open and crawled to the other room.

On the other side now..

Marcus: Ok guys there is one more room after this one then were done

Liv: Yea but there's 5 minutes left

Makayla: theres a wall with balloons and darts

Marcus picks up a dart and was about to throw it.

Makayla: WAIT!! Theres a note

Jordan goes and picks it up

Jordan: “Pop, pop, pop — a secret’s inside, A word to be spelled, but time won’t abide. Pop them in order, don’t get it wrong, Or the clock will steal time before too long.” What the hell does that mean?

Wyatt: each of us need to pop a balloon to spell a word but we have to pop it in the right order or-

Makayla: We lose time!!

They look around to find some sort of code. Liv and Makayla stumble upon a painting and together they realized the painting lined up with the balloons and ran over. The word spelled "CLOWNS" and Liv competitively ran over to the code on the door and unlocked it.

Jordan: You know we are all on the same team right

Liv: say what you want because you know the best person in here gets bragging rights

They walk into the last room where a sign reads "Six strange shapes, a final test, Match them right to beat the rest. Time runs low, don’t miss your cue—The circus sleeps… but will you too?"

Everyone is off looking for keys and Makayla and Wyatt are paired up.

Wyatt: Thanks for the invite

Makayla: oh that was all Liv (laughs) I didn't even know if I was coming

Wyatt: I'm glad you did (smiles)

She gives him a warm smile back

Makayla: I really needed today

Wyatt: yea it must've sucked being sick for so long

Makayla: What.. oh yea sick, yea it has sucked being at home that long

Wyatt: you don't like your family?

Makayla: uhh it's complicated I promise to tell you later

He smiled and Liv screamed out she found a key. After a while everyone found a key and Unlocked the door with 23 seconds left. A killer clown popped up and Jumpscared them.

Madi: MARCUS I HATE YOU

He laughed and jokingly pulled her into a hug then she playfully pushed him off her. The clown handed them their award and then they left.

On the car ride home Makayla and Liv talked in the backseat.

Makayla: I really needed this

Liv: I know (warm smile)

Liv: sooo you and Wyatt??

Makayla: it's not like that (smiling) He was just nice to talk to

Liv: mhmm

Makayla: I dunno he's super sweet I just don't know if I want to date anybody right now

Kami: totally not being nosey but you don't need to rush into anyone or anything let love come to you

Liv: mami te amo pero por favor ocúpate de tus asuntos

Kami: I'm just tryna give Makayla some advice mi hija

Makayla: and I really appreciate it Ms. Torres

Liv: don't be nice to here (laughing)

They laugh together and talk the rest of the ride. They get to Makayla's driveway.

Kami: you can stay over tonight if you want to

Makayla looks at the front door and thinks.

Makayla: I think I'm ok but thank you

Kami: Am I taking you to school tomorrow?

Makayla: yes pleaseee

Kami laughs and Makayla thanks her and gets out. She hesitates before heading inside. When she gets in she plops on her bed and just lays there. She hears a knock on the door and sighs.

Michael: May I come in.

Makayla: yea

She sits up on the the bed and he sits next to her.

Michael: I am sorry M I have lost myself

Makayla: you think..

Michael: please just hear me out

Michael: I am the adult in this house and it's time I acted like it

Makayla: Dad that's the thing before mom left you were the take his daughter to ballet type of dad you were never a bad dad that's why it hurts to see you like this.

She started to tear up.

Makayla: Dad I needed you the most and you were locked in your room. I needed you the most and you shut me out and I had to learn how to take care of myself.

He pull her into a tight caring hug.

Michael: I will do better Pumpkin I promise

She put her head on her shoulder and the camera panned out and the screen went black.
