Breaking the Rules of Time: A Temptation to Alter History

Sci-fi

By LEO STORIESPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

In the year 2047, time travel had become a reality, thanks to the groundbreaking research of Dr. Emily Wright. It was a technological breakthrough that allowed people to travel back in time, but with a catch. The past could be observed, but not changed. The laws of physics and causality made it impossible for any event to be altered, no matter how minor. Or so they thought.

Alice was one of the time travellers who had always been fascinated by the past. She was a historian by training, but now she had the opportunity to experience history firsthand. She had been on several trips to different eras, but there was one historical event that had always fascinated her, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

On her latest trip to Dallas in 1963, Alice was determined to find out who killed Kennedy. She had spent months researching and studying the case, and now she had a chance to witness the event for herself. She had taken up a position on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository building, armed with a pair of binoculars and a camera.

As Alice watched, she saw Lee Harvey Oswald appear in the sixth-floor window of the book depository building. She knew what was about to happen, but something inside her urged her to act. Against her better judgement, she picked up the rifle that was leaning against the wall and aimed it at Oswald.

At that moment, Alice felt a strange sensation in her head, as if her thoughts were being scrambled. She tried to pull the trigger, but her hand wouldn't move. It was as if her body had been paralyzed. Then she heard a voice in her head, a voice she had never heard before.

"Stop, Alice. You cannot alter the past. You know this."

It was the voice of Dr. Emily Wright, the inventor of the time machine. Alice knew it was impossible to change the past, but in that moment, she had been tempted to try. She put down the rifle and sat down on the floor, feeling dizzy and disoriented.

As Alice tried to make sense of what had just happened, she heard a commotion outside. When she looked out the window, she saw the motorcade passing by, and heard the shots that would forever change history. Kennedy had been hit, and the chaos that ensued was overwhelming.

Alice knew that she had to leave immediately, before she was discovered by the authorities. She quickly packed up her things and made her way down the stairs. As she walked out of the building, she saw a man standing in front of her. It was Lee Harvey Oswald.

Alice froze. She knew that Oswald was the assassin, but she had never seen him up close before. She was about to turn and run when Oswald spoke.

"Miss, do you know what's going on? I heard gunshots, and I'm afraid for my safety."

Alice was stunned. Oswald seemed genuinely scared and confused, nothing like the cold-blooded killer she had imagined. She decided to take a chance and talk to him.

"Yes, there were gunshots. The President has been shot. We need to get out of here."

Oswald looked at her gratefully, and they walked out of the building together. As they made their way through the chaos of the crowds, Alice began to feel a strange sense of deja vu. It was as if she had lived through this moment before, even though she knew that was impossible.

When they reached the parking lot, Oswald turned to Alice and said, "Thank you for helping me. I owe you my life."

Alice nodded, unable to speak. She watched as Oswald got into his car and drove away, never to be seen alive again.

As Alice returned to the present, she couldn't shake the feeling.
