Chapter 1 - Arrakis:
The planet Arrakis, usually referred to as Dune, is first introduced in the story as the only known source of the coveted spice melange. It is a desert world home to vicious sandworms. The emperor in charge gives House Atreides authority over Arrakis, forcing House Harkonnen - their enduring rivals - out of power. The leader of House Atreides, Duke Leto Atreides, is cautious about the risks involved in ruling Arrakis but sees this as a chance to build a new power base.

Chapter 2 - House Atreides:
The Atreides family, consisting of their son Paul, concubine Lady Jessica, and Duke Leto, get ready to travel to Arrakis. In his new assignment, Paul discovers the political underbelly of their new task as well as the history of his family. As all is going on, Lady Jessica, a sisterhood member of Bene Gesserit with unique talents, considers how she contributed to Paul's fate.

Chapter 3 - The Fremen:
The Atreides family first encounters the Fremen, the planet's indigenous population, upon arriving on Arrakis. The Fremen have developed distinct rituals and traditions as a result of their adaptation to the hostile desert climate. Paul starts to learn about the Fremen's way of life and grows fascinated by them.

Chapter 4 - The Spice Melange:
The most valuable material in the cosmos is the spice mixture that is extracted from Arrakis's sandworms. It provides increased consciousness, longer life, and the capacity to fold space for interstellar travel. The political and economic power conflicts of the noble houses are mostly centered on control of the spice trade.

Chapter 5 - Betrayal:
As the Atreides get used to their new position on Arrakis, they learn that the emperor and House Harkonnen are planning an attack on them. Duke Leto's family is betrayed by Dr. Yueh, his trusted advisor, which culminates in a terrible attack that claims Leto's life and forces Paul and Jessica to flee into the desert.

Chapter 6 - The Prophecy:
Paul and Jessica run into the Fremen as they head into the desert; they think Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach, the messiah that has been promised. As Paul earns the Fremen's respect and trust, he struggles with his new job and starts to embrace his fate.

Chapter 7 - The Rise of Muad'Dib:
Paul takes on the persona of Muad'Dib, the commander of the Fremen uprising against the emperor and the Harkonnens' tyrannical authority. Paul starts waging a guerilla war against his adversaries with the Fremen's assistance in an effort to seize control of the spice and realize his destiny as the Kwisatz Haderach.

Chapter 8 - The Jihad:
Paul's mythology of Muad'Dib is growing in popularity. Motivated by his ideas and magnetic personality, his adherents begin a cosmic holy war, also known as jihad. Paul battles the moral conundrums raised by his newfound power as well as the fallout from his deeds.

Chapter 9 - The Golden Path:
Paul struggles with the weight of his destiny and the decisions he needs to make in order to preserve humanity's future. By laying forth a plan known as the Golden Path, which attempts to protect against the perils of fanaticism and authoritarianism while preserving human diversity and freedom, he attempts to avoid the traps of tyranny and oppression.

The vast and engrossing epic "Dune" delves into topics of politics, religion, ecology, and the nature of power.
