Sniffling from his cold, he asked, "I'm sorry Barbara, I'm just not feeling well again today. Would you mind getting me something to eat?"
"Sure thing, honey. Here," she passed their babe to him, "cling on tight little one. Daddy's gonna watch ya'. I'll be right back dear."
"Stay safe, stay light."
"I will." She took flight.
After having visited their favorite barn, she decided that tonight Johnny would need a bit more of a kick in his meal than before.
"Ahhh, donkey." After making a few painless bites and slurping up, she flew back home.
Hanging upside down again, she nuzzled snouts with them, as their babe chittered, she feed him some of the dinner she brought.
"Ready Johnny?" He nodded his head eagerly as his tummy rumbled, "Come here." They locked lips as she shared her dinner with him.
With a satisfied gulp he said, "Thanks dear. I really needed that."
"You rest up, I'm going back for seconds. See you in the morning."
As he clung to the rafters, their babe yawned and buried its face in his dad's fuzzy chest. Smiling as she left, she flew on out catching an updraft.
"I wonder if that wound's still bleeding. If not I guess I can always settle for some beef."
Thinking back to how her and Johnny met, she remembered how he had fed her for the first few days after she had mistakenly taken a dip in the drink of the nearby canal. She had the sniffles for a week.
"Water may drown those with fur of brown. Though the cold makes us sicker, blood helps to nourish us quicker. When it comes to help, we'll never lack. Thus what it means to form a pact."
Upon lapping up her fill, she rejoined her family once again. As his snores lulled her closer to sleep, Barbara wrapped her wings around him, as they dangled from the rafters.
