Best friend

There was a time when Emma and Jake thought they were the only kids in the world who truly understood what it meant to be best friends forever. They'd known each other since kindergarten when Jake shared his crayons with Emma, who had forgotten hers at home. That simple act of kindness sparked a bond that would last a lifetime.

Fast forward to middle school, where they were inseparable. They did everything together, from playing video games on lazy Saturday afternoons to studying for dreaded math tests. They even had their own secret handshake, a complicated series of slaps and fist bumps that nobody else could ever seem to get right.

One summer, their bond was put to the test. Jake’s family decided to move across the country for his dad’s new job. The news hit Emma like a ton of bricks. They sat on her front porch, the evening sun casting long shadows, trying to process what this meant. “We’ll still be best friends,” Jake assured her, though he looked like he was trying to convince himself more than Emma.

Emma nodded, blinking back tears. “Of course we will. Best friends forever, right?”

“Forever,” Jake agreed, pinky promising her.

The day Jake moved away was tough. Emma felt like she was losing a part of herself. They texted and called each other every day at first, sharing every detail of their lives. But as time passed, the calls became less frequent. They both made new friends, got busy with school, sports, and life in general.

One day, Emma received a package in the mail. Inside was a framed picture of her and Jake at their fifth-grade graduation, with a note that read: “Remember this? Best friends forever.” It made her smile and cry at the same time. She put the picture on her nightstand and texted Jake immediately.

“Got your package. Miss you, bud.”

“Miss you too,” came the reply almost instantly. “Guess what? We’re moving back next month!”

Emma could hardly contain her excitement. They picked up right where they left off, like Jake had never left. High school was a whirlwind of experiences, but they faced it all together. They went to prom, got their driver’s licenses, and graduated. They even chose colleges close to each other.

As they got older, they faced new challenges—relationships, jobs, and the pressures of adulthood—but through it all, they remained best friends. When Emma got married, Jake stood by her side, and when Jake opened his own business, Emma was his first customer.

Years went by, and even as life continued to throw curveballs, their friendship remained a constant. They always made time for each other, whether it was a quick coffee catch-up or a weekend getaway.

One evening, as they sat on Emma’s porch reminiscing about the good old days, Jake laughed. “Remember when we thought moving away was the end of the world?”

Emma grinned. “Yeah, but look at us now. Best friends forever, right?”

“Forever,” Jake said, raising his coffee cup in a toast.
