Behind The Sun

Two astronauts adventure a little too far.

By Aidan KronzPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Two astronauts were selected for a grand journey that would last at least twenty years. This was a very special task that only the best of the best could pull off. Although this might seem important, their only job was to explore.

Matthew Fark and James Denner where shaking hands and bowing as they were congratulated on their selection. Only a handful of astronauts were deemed fit to go on this mission, and the duo had beaten all of them. They both had around thirty plus years of experience, and were ready to take on the task at hand. Little did they know they had no idea what was in store for them.

Twenty years is a long time, and it was no surprise that Matthew and James both had loving families. The company backing the project knew that it would be hard for these families to function without a father for twenty years, so they gave each of the families twenty-five million dollars to live off of. When both astronauts heard about that, it was a no-brainer to go on the mission.

The day of the launch had come. Matthew and James both had said their goodbyes and were strapped into the cockpit. Their mission? To explore past the sun.

Many wondered what could be behind it. It was this big bright thing in the sky, and was too bright for anybody to see past it. It had been a question that had gone long unanswered until now.

Fast forward ten years into the mission. Matthew and James are nearing close to the sun, and are making good progress towards the other side of it. They have kept in contact with the command center back on earth, and have learned that the mission may last an extended two years to make sure there is time to get back to the earth. The good thing is, the spaceship they were in could sustain them for an extra five years past the mission time goal.

Fast forward one more year. The astronauts are now on the verge of the edge of the sun. They are trying to see what might be behind it. They can't make it out to be anything yet, but it seems to be something with almost no color, something that doesn't reflect any light, nor produce it. They knew something had to be there, for the simple fact that they saw a vast area where no other stars could be seen. Only one more month, and they would be able to fully identify what they saw.

There was no more one month. After the last transmission from James and Matthew being two weeks ago, it was safe to assume back on earth that something had happened to them.

You might ask yourself: "well, what did happen to them?" The problem is is that nobody knows. I wish I could tell you myself, but genuinely not a single soul knows what happened to them on that day that they made it around the sun.

Of course people have their theories. Many believe it was a black hole behind the sun, something that sucked them up for them to not be heard from ever again. Others believe they might have had a spaceship malfunction, and something went wrong on the spacecraft that messed up the operation. The last theory, the one that few believe, is that something else made contact with them, something unhuman.

The pure confusion of what happened to James and Matthew still crosses peoples mind everyday here on earth. Many are afraid, others not. I am writing this because today is the day that they were expected to get back. Sadly, I have a feeling that James and Matthews story will slowly be forgotten as the world evolves and continues to move on.
