Behind The Last Window

B. L Devereux

By Bethany DevereuxPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. She could see the outlines of mountains in the distance and could see the rushing waters of a far away ocean. There weren’t any animals around and it was oddly quiet without the sounds of any creatures. She could see the ground was dry and cracked, and it almost reminded her of being in a Scorching hot desert. The temperature was rather odd though as Elsie sat there in the freezing cold. She cried out but no one could hear her screams. She was desperate. She had no idea where she was or who had decided to keep her here.

She had seen so many different worlds… so many different places, and yet nothing seemed familiar to her. She was desperate to get away, but she had nowhere to go. Where would she run to, who would she go to? She was stuck. Trapped in a room with only her captor for company. She never learnt his name… he was just known as The man. He was an odd kind of fellow. He never spoke, or made any sound. He would just point and gesture to different things. This terrified Elsie. She was only young and yet she seemed to be in one of the worst possible situations. She would never have wished this upon anybody.

Before her capture, Elsie lived a happy life. She was content. She had good parents, friends and a home. She was in love with the idea of adventure and wanted to explore the world one day… but not like this. This was something else. Whatever the reason was for her being taken, it certainly was not for adventure.

The man walked into the room and stood there in front of her. He didn’t say a word… he just stared at her. Frightened and alone Elsie decided not to move, or make any kind of sound for that matter.

The man pointed to a small container made of steel at the end of Elsie’s bed. He then nodded as he left. Elsie approached the chest, shivering with fear, praying she wouldn’t find anything that could put her in harms way. She opened the container and inside was a book. This was a very odd book. It had no title, the pages seemed a little torn and it was bound together by leather.

Elsie opened the book, the inside was hollow. It took her a moment or two before she noticed a key. She took the key from the book and thought about what it could mean, but thoughts to Elsie at this time were rather scattered. It was almost as if she didn’t know her own mind at times. Deep down she was longing and hoping for all of this to be a dream. She was adamant that her mother would come and wake her and tell her that it would all be alright… but it wasn’t. This was reality. The man returned to Elsie once more, as he pointed to the window. Elsie took a breath as she stood up, she was shaking.

The man gestured towards the window yet again as he nodded like before and left. Elsie walked over the window slowly. She looked out at the world. She placed the key into the windows lock and with a bit of luck, it opened. Elsie took one more look at the room she was in, she didn’t give a second thought to the man who had become her captor. And it appeared that room was slowly beginning to fade away as she took a deep breath, Elsie climbed up on to the ledge and escaped from behind the last window.
