- Explorer, welcome back. Feeling a little tired of getting caught up in problems in paradise? Nobody could blame you. The Backrooms can sometimes make one feel as though they are biting into a large, juicy, delicious apple only to discover that there is a worm inside—or, more accurately, half a worm now. The Backrooms frequently conjure up some hazy memory of the past, whether it is the shag carpeting of the 1970s, the dated wallpaper and storefronts of 1985, or even the desolate, corporate wastelands that feel all too native to the 2000 era. Have you ever had the feeling that you were born in the wrong era? You were either too old to explore the earth or too young to explore the galaxy, but you arrived in the Backrooms just in time to explore its many levels and discover a real land of the lost where the past, present, and future appear to merge and converge.
- You have seen more than enough of the past and present to last a lifetime, but you haven't seen nearly enough of the future. Sure, we could get all existential and claim that we are actually always living in the future. A single microsecond, or a sliver so thin it cannot even be perceived, makes up the present. Blink. It's no longer there. Greetings from the future, we hope it's everything you expected it to be. Welcome to Level 15 of the Futuristic Halls in the Backrooms as well. You don't know how you got here, and you have no idea how you'll get out either. But that's okay. Everything is fine, isn't it? You're just hurdling forward into the eternal future, where everything good is.
- The best you can do is trust yourself, trust the instinct that has brought you this far, and keep going because the exit will be sitting somewhere in that hazy, greasy mass we call the future. Stride forward. Continue your exploration. You're going to use the exact same strategies here to see if it works, because if you've survived this long, it can't be that counterintuitive, can it? Hopefully, you won't get snake eyes from these dice. As you get closer, pair of metal doors slide open easily, bringing to mind the Starship Enterprise's bridge doors in all those old Star Trek episodes you've seen way too many times. The first futuristic building is visible on the other side, stretching out to a bend in the road.
- It is a delicate assemblage of metal, plastic, and ceramics that are all woven through concrete. It is also blindingly white and gleaming silver, with pipes running above it. Your steps make a clanging noise on the ground as you proceed cautiously. Although you have no idea what may lie beyond this strange location, your mind is already racing with associations from distant and nearby media that you have only dimly recalled. The rest of your foot is falling slowly and carefully as you keep quiet, letting your heel land first. The more you get older, the less you believe in the entities you've seen. Whether it's evil robots or futuristic invisible beings, you never know what might be hiding in these austere, mechanical hallways.
- You still recall that terrible Resident Evil movie with the deadly laser-filled hallway that you saw maybe ten years ago. You currently fear being sliced into cubes like some miserable human cheese plate, which is another thing you fear. Or what if a panel in the ceiling opens up and some crazy AI-powered minigun descends and fires? As your anxiety grows, you try to control your breathing. Simply keep moving down these modern, sleek hallways. You only need to keep moving; just do that. Consequently, why do you feel as though your body is boiling over into a rapid-onset fever and that your heart rate is increasing? Why do your vision and muscles feel prickly?
- Even though nothing is happening, having a panic attack still feels important because you are suddenly unable to breathe. When you pant, you stoop to your knees. Simply feeling normal is all you want. You need your breath to return. Explorer, why are you so terrified when nothing is even happening? There is only a hallway. While you have the instinct to believe that perhaps this is some sort of anomalous effect brought on by the level itself, this is not necessarily the case, Explorer. You appear to be experiencing a mild case of post-traumatic stress disorder. You've encountered more sudden danger since coming here to the backrooms than you ever have.
- Your body and mind are now permanently preparing themselves for some unseen horror or vicious person who may be lurking just around the corner. It has left an irreparable mark on your mind. Even the highest levels of safety seem to contain hidden danger these days. We regret that you have to go through this, Explorer, but it is an inevitable result of your current situation. Maybe you wouldn't be going through this suffering right now if you had just decided to stay put on a safer level a while back. However, you didn't come here looking for relaxation or to settle into the familiar rhythms; you came looking for adventure. You wished for passion.
- You desired a challenging life as opposed to one that gradually wore you down. But every sword has two edges, as you know, Explorer. And you're feeling the other edge of that sword we call excitement as you crouch on your knees in these chrome hallways, clutching your throat. I hope it was worthwhile. The panic attack eventually passes, and you are able to stand up again with the help of your strength and composure. You proceed, taking in the futuristic halls with slightly more sober eyes. They just keep going, occasionally dipping or turning a little, but they mostly stay in the same bland corridors of a million procedurally generated video game secret laboratories.
- You find it difficult to contain your excitement and curiosity as you start to encounter large metal doors that lead from the hallways to other rooms. In many of them, you can often hear these rooms coming before you even see them. The interior engines' never-ending thrumming whir. Electricity crackles as servos and gears turn. Similar machines have been seen on earlier levels, but none have been this sophisticated and sleek.
- Of course, most of the doors that lead to them are locked—probably for your safety. However, many of the doors still have the plexiglass viewing ports that allow you to see what's happening inside. Who designed these devices, and what actual function do they currently serve? Some of them appear to do nothing more than produces electricity, but where are they used? Here or in the other backrooms? While others actually make things.
