Chapter 2

I was the last one up that morning which meant I would be the last one to shower.

“Oh crap,” I said, throwing down my fist into my mattress. I sat up and began to walk to the bathroom. It was an okay size, a small separate room held the toilet and shower. The rest was a giant mirror and two sinks. “Why didn’t any of you wake me up? There won’t be any hot water left,” I looked inside and saw Halle now with wavy hair from the braids and applying a long cateye with her eyeliner and Brailee was brushing her hair.

Brailee was also a very pretty girl. She was short, only two inches taller than Halle with an oval body. Her hair hung just a few inches past her collarbone; it was wavy and curtain bangs hugged her face and was just a few shades lighter than Halle’s. Her nose and cheeks were littered with freckles and with the sleeves rolled up in her uniform I could see her birthmark on her right arm that looked like the Little Dipper. Her eyes were also green but hers were a few shades darker then Halle’s. They looked kinda similar to where they could be mistaken for sisters, but they had different face shapes and noses. She was the first one to speak.

“Well we wanted hot showers!” she laughed. “Plus you always take the longest,” she pointed her brush at me.

“That’s not true,”

“It’s completely true!” Halle said now straining to apply mascara. I rolled my eyes.

“Well is Kailey still in there?” I gestured my thumb to the shower. I hoped she wasn't. I could swear I heard the water rushing from the shower head.

“What do you think?” Kailey yelled at me from the shower and I groaned. I kicked the door.

“I swear Kailey if you take any longer I’ll beat you with my nunchucks!”

“Not if I hide them!” She sing-songed the words to me. I was really getting tired of that. “Don’t get your panties in a bunch, I’ll be out in a sec,” I heard her turn off the water.

“You know that the only one who can get her ‘panties’ in any bunch is Luke,” Halle said. I felt my face grow hot.

“He so can not!” I protested but my friends were already laughing. I rolled my eyes.

Luke Boswell was the second bane of my existence. He was always trying to be better than me. And the worst part was, he was really hot! He was almost a foot taller than me with fiery red hair in a haircut where it was shorter on the sides but longer and curly on top and light blue eyes. Dimples would pop up with his devilish smile and his victorious smirk he always gave me when he won against me. He was muscular and lean but not too much that his body was hulking. But his arms were strong and he had a six pack I knew was there because of late night training. He always had his tie ever so slightly loosened and wore dark wash jeans and he often wore vans or converse. And he never wore a jacket or another cover unless it was winter then he just wore a regular jacket. He loved nothing more than to make me angry. But it was hard to deny he was gorgeous.

“Okay dude you’ve got it bad,” Brailee said.

“He always pisses me off,” I knocked on the door again trying to get Kailey to hurry. “How much longer?”

“Hey the more you distract me the longer it will be, and I agree with them you just get pissed because he’s able to beat you, but you enjoy the challenge,” she emerged from the small room, and now I was the only one who had to get ready. They all wore the school uniform. Blood red plaid skirts with a short sleeve white shirt and a tie the same red as the skirt. We were allowed to just wear the shirt or use anything to cover it as long as they could see the tie which I thought was stupid. Halle wore her boyfriend's extra leather jacket that was probably two or three sizes too big as it covered her hands even with her trying to pull them up. Her shoes were simple white and prestien sneakers. Brailee wore a simple grey vest that made her look like the kids from the Harry Potter movies they all liked. Her shoes were black ballet flats. Kailey wore a jean jacket with so many pockets I lost count that were for all of her small gadgets and she also wore ballet flats.

Kailey had honey blonde hair, it was short almost an inch past her ears and was in tight coils. Her face was round and sweet with dark blue eyes that reminded me of ocean waters. Her body was curvy and short. She was a weapons engineer. They made so many amazing gadgets, like Halle’s glasses and my lipsticks that was actually the world's smallest gun and dart shooter. I remembered when she wanted to have Brailee hack into the pentagon and get some schematics for some weapons so she could improve them. She was the best.

“Whatever I’m not arguing with you guys I don't have time." I ran in and took a shower. The hot water scalded my body, but I didn’t have time to adjust the water. I grabbed my favorite vanilla soap and quickly scrubbed away all of the sweat and grime I had unfortunately slept in the night before because of the late night training. I shampooed my thick hair and then conditioned it with my rose shampoo and conditioner. I couldn’t have been more than ten minutes. So I had maybe forty minutes now.

“I swear if you take forever we’re leaving without you,” I heard Halle yell through the door. As I stepped out of the shower I quickly dried off, some of my skin and most of my hair still wet, and quickly put on my clothes. The school uniform but with my leather jacket the black leather stuck to my skin uncomfortably and my favorite black combat boots which also slightly stuck to my skin. I ran out the door and began to blow dry my hair.

“Dear lord! You three are devils!”

“Nope,” said Brailee.

“Just a spy,”

“A computer hacker,”

“And a weapons designer and engineer,”

“Like I said, devils.” They laughed at me. And there was a knock at the door. We all knew who it was. I heard Halle bolt to the door.

“What’s up ladies?” The voice was deep and joking. I heard a giggle from Halle and I didn’t dare look in their directions. That would be her boyfriend.

“Oh that’s gross,” Brailee said with fake disgust.

“There is a hallway, you two!” I yelled from the bathroom though I didn’t see them kissing. After a few minutes I yelled to my friends again. “Is it safe to look again?”

“Shut up and yes,” Halle yelled back. I saw her boyfriend. Bartholomew “Wolf” Jameson. He was a tall muscular guy with dark, almost black slightly long and shaggy hair. His jawline was sharp, his skin was tan, and his eyes were a bright icy blue. He was a spy like Halle. He had a kind of fifties look with his raised collar, black leather jacket and loose or sometimes undone tie. The guys could either wear khakis or jeans. He always opted for the jean look. He was kind and protective of Halle, sometimes too much so, but he was funny and sarcastic. He almost reminded me of Luke but he was less of a pain in the ass.

“Hey Wolf,” I yelled. I had known Wolf almost as long as I had known Halle. He came to school when he was ten, but he was different from any other kid that had come to the school before. His parents were normal. But not Wolf. Wolf was almost an expert at martial arts at ten and was almost certified a genius. When dad had heard about him and that he was in a normal school he immediately talked to his parents. His parents still had no idea it was a school for assassins and spies. But he knew and he excelled. He had become friends with me and Halle quickly. The other kids made fun of his name so I told him to pick a new one, and that was his new code name, Wolf. I had to deal with years of pining once they had turned thirteen with the two of them wanting nothing more than to date each other. It took two more years before they dated. Two years later and they were going strong but they were not without their problems.

“You’re still not ready, Liz?” his voice was in disbelief. “You three didn’t wake her up did you?” They all shook their heads in unison. I heard his loud laughter and rolled my eyes. I had twenty minutes before we had to go and my hair was finally dry. I began to quickly curl my hair. I wanted to look nice today. Because I would be going out into the real world. I was able to do it with ten minutes to spare and only a few minor burns on my hands but the feeling was nothing.

My curled hair hung in my face slightly and I thought it looked nice. But I grabbed a few strands and braided them anyway. I did this to two more pieces and twisted the left side of my hair all the way back and pinned it back. I looked back in the mirror and I thought I looked good, but I wanted to look great. I yelled back to the room.

“Halle, can you stop making out with your boyfriend and come help me?”

“We weren’t making out,” she said as she popped her head in. “Wow, you look great so what’s up?”

“Eyeliner please?”

She rolled her eyes. “You really need to learn how to do this yourself,”

“I know, I know just do my makeup please,” she did it fast but it still looked amazing! My eyes were dark and smokey with cat eyeliner and mascara. My cheeks were now rosy instead of the paleness of my regular face. And she added a dark wine red lipstick to my lips.

“Now you look gorgeous!” she cheered and clapped.

I rolled my eyes. “I do not but I will admit I look a little better. Thanks!” She could be fiery and tough or sweet and super girly the switch could be almost instantaneous. I walked out of the bathroom and my friends’ faces looked at me with surprise.

“No problem,”

“Wow, don't look so surprised,” I laughed.

“What’s with the fancy hair and makeup?” Kailey asked. I felt my heart ping with pain.

“No reason just for the test today,” I began to fiddle with the side of my hair that was down. It was such a big lie. I would never let them know the real reason. I dress up every year on this day. But they never put it together which was surprising. I quickly grabbed my backpack which held most of my gadgets and homework.

“Well if we don't go now we’re going to be late,” Brailee exclaimed. We all bolted out of the room. I bit back tears that I felt welling up in my eyes.

The halls of the school were filled to the brim with students of all ages, sizes, shapes, and colors. They crowded the halls so much that we had to squeeze and push our way through the crowd. Lucky for us today we all had field class. That class met in the gym before we ever left for tests. And the gym wasn’t far.

It didn’t take us long to get to class and luckily it was just before the bell rang. We all breathed heavily.

“Made it,” I said breathlessly. We all smiled at each other until we heard the teacher, Mr. Slavens, clear his throat.

“Nice to see the five of you could make it to my class,” his eyes were a stormy gray and his hair was silver. His skin was a warm brown that reminded me of cinnamon. He had once been my dad’s teacher but now he worked him. He wore a two piece gray suit that matched his eyes. His brown loafers did nothing to make him taller even though he was just an inch taller than me so he wasn’t very short. His half moon glasses sat on his nose looking down on them from the small stage at the back of the gym. His voice was deep and gruff. “Please take your seats.

“Yes sir,” we all said. I felt a few sets of eyes on me. Kaia, a girl with almost midnight black skin, thousands of small braids in a ponytail on her head and light eyes that made her almost unearthly beautiful.

Hale, a guy with amber eyes, dirty blonde hair, and dark tan skin, smirked at me or one of my friends. I couldn’t tell who. Though I doubted it was me.

Then I saw Luke. His damn smirk hit me like a freight train. Seeing as it was only mid September he just wore his short sleeve shirt but he still had a plain black jacket. His fiery hair was wet like he was rushing that morning too. His eyes were filled with so much micheive I wanted to slap him in the face, but they also drew me in like a magnet. I rolled my eyes as we all took our seats on the floor of the gym. Luckily we weren’t the only ones that were late so people moved on quickly.

Unfortunately, Kathryn was one of the ones who was late. She walked into class slowly and surely like she owned the room. Her black knee high boots with a stiletto clicked on the gym floor. She had her shirt tied up above her stomach so her olive skin was exposed. Her light skinny jeans had so many holes in them that it was amazing the fabric was holding together. Her long dark curls fell just above the end of her shirt. I rolled my eyes at her.

“Wow, someone is trying to impress somebody,” Wolf said.

“Yeah but what guy doesn’t already want her?” I asked. We all watched as Wolf slowly raised his hand and cocked one eyebrow in a way that made him kind of annoying but mainly funny.

“Jeez I have no idea,” sarcasm dripped from his voice and we all stifled a laugh as Halle swatted at his arm. The clicking of heels got louder. Of course she was going to sit next to me. Damn it.

“What are we laughing about? Elizabeth’s pathetic attempt to look like anything other than an ugly loser?” her voice was full of fake niceness. This was one of the reasons I had low self esteem but I never showed it. I never wanted to give her the satisfaction.

“No, we were laughing at your attempt to look like this,” I gestured to her. If she was mad it was only shown by a tick in her jaw and a quick grimous of her mouth that disappeared as quickly as they appeared.

“I’m dressed up for the occasion,” she smiled at me like a cat playing with her food. I hoped she didn’t know what today was, she was just saying words. She didn't know, she didn’t know.

“And what occasion would that be Kathryn?” Brailee asked. She sounded bored but I knew that her curiosity was really getting the better of her.

“We are, for the only time this month, going out into the real world, screw me for wanting to look nice,”

“By the way you’re dressed I would guess you wanted to get screwed. I just didn’t think you wanted me to do it. Sorry I'm not interested.” I said. My friends laughed quietly.

“You’ll pay for that later,” she growled and I thanked god she left and Mr. Slavens began to talk and the test was about to start.
