Art of Revealing Secrets

In one of those trash cans. He kept saying that no one should open it.

The detective met his eyes once more.

"I can't believe you went out of your way to find him."

"Of course I did; he's my best friend."

"I thought he didn't have any friends?"

"He doesn't, but that doesn't mean we couldn't try and help each other." He turned back around as the officer spoke up again.

"Look, detective, I know that this is probably a tough situation for you right now, but I don't want this man getting off scot-free."

"But he didn't do anything wrong." The detective looked over again, trying to catch his attention. But it was too late.

"I understand where you're coming from, and if we hadn't found him, maybe this wouldn't be a problem."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, we found him in an alleyway, beaten up pretty bad. We had to call the police because he was bleeding pretty badly."

"So what happened?"

"We got there just in time to see him get taken away by the cops."

"Did you catch who took him?"

"No, we weren't sure at first."

"So he wasn't able to give you a description?"

"Not really; we only noticed he was mesmerized by an object in his hands."

"An object? What kind of object?"

"It was a book or something of the like, I think."

"Where did you see this thing?"

"In one of those trash cans. He kept saying that no one should open it."

"And then?"

"After that, he just fell unconscious." The officer walked over to the bin and started rifling through it.

"Is this the book that can't be opened?" he asked.

"Yeah, what does it look like?" The detective walked over and looked into the bin with the policeman. It was a thick, hardback book.

"Why would he have that on hand in a dumpster? Do you suppose it has anything to do with whatever they arrested him for?" The officer shrugged as he picked up the book and closed the bin lid.

"I guess not; it looks pretty unremarkable to me. I'll keep it close for now, though; I'd hate to lose it." He stood upright and looked towards the door.

"Thank you very much, detective, for letting me know." Before walking out, he looked back at the detective, almost smiling.

"By the way, good luck!"

Once the officer left the room and the detective had closed the doors behind himself, he looked down at the book in his hands. After the officer left, he looked down at the cover of the book. He flipped the front cover open, reading the title. 'Art of Revealing Secrets' it said.

As he flipped to another page, the title suddenly changed to a glowing green light with the name and location of the people that beat him. And the weirdest thing, the location kept updating. Until he was looking at the words: "You are the new owner of the book."

The detective looked down at the text and blinked a few times to ensure that the words were genuine. He flipped back several pages, from the beginning to a page titled 'Art of Revealing Secrets.' Then back to the beginning of a page that had no writing, only a small image that read: 'You are the new owner of the book.'

"How…how did this happen?"

He mumbled quietly to himself. He looked down at the book, flipping through page after page. Every single one of them had information about him, but also the guys he is after.

Each page contained an entire paragraph of information. And most of it was written in English, so he could understand why no one else seemed to be seeing it.

And the detective would never lose sight of the little book ever again, helping him in all his cases.
